Isn't MESA sitting pretty with a US/HP merger? They fly for both and UNITED!!! Hey this is getting interesting. MESA may be trying to merge ALL 3 airlines.

HHMMM!?! They are the ones with $$$ right now.

MESA has been too quiet during the past few months. Especially with the Republic and Air Wisconsin deals. During the first US BK, Ornstein was very vocal about Mesa's dealings with US. Now he's keeping his mouth shut? Very interesting again.

And isn't $300 million in cash more than what US has? HUH?

This evening, the Wall Street Journal published a story about a potential America West/US Airways merger. As a publicly traded company, our response to any media inquiries like this is that we, as a general policy, do not comment on rumors and speculation.

What we can say is that the entire America West team has worked very hard during the last several years to position our company for future success and growth. Each of our 13,500 employees should take great pride in how far you have brought this airline. As you know, and as we communicated during the potential acquisition of ATA airlines last year, we will only embark upon a strategy that benefits our company, our employees, our shareholders and our passengers.

That said the best course of action for America West at this time is to continue to run a great airline and take care of our customers. Whether consolidation is a fix that starts to occur very quickly or transpires over the next several years, we have to make sure America West is as strong as it can be should any opportunities arise. Please do your best not to worry about the rumors and continue doing the great job you are for America West.


do not pay attention to the "its not credible part" . i got this from airlners.net. a poster there seems to think the merger reports are not credible. but no where in this newsletter does hp deny any merger attempt

A few months ago, according to one person familiar with the matter, US Airways' big creditors began to worry that the carrier would be on shaky financial ground when it emerged, and encouraged the company to seek a partner. Certain US Airways' key creditors -- including GE's airline financing and leasing arm -- are actively involved in the merger talks, according to people familiar with the matter.

excellent credentials for dp.....phx may be the place for hq? then again maybe just a codeshare deal for 1.5 to two years.....

Sorry, most of US' employees were all ready through two mergers, PSA and Piedmont, and dovetailed was used in both.

Unlike your carrier and your union, (TWU), a union is about fairness, not about making one group suffer as the TWU did with the former TWA employees.

Haven't you learned by now that collective bargaining agreements mean NOTHING while in BK?

If some sort of merger is indeed going to happen, look for a conversation like this in the near future:

"Sign your succession rights away on the dotted line, or the deal with America West is off and we liquidate."

Or, even more simply, "Today we filed an 1113© motion with the court to eliminate your seniority protections."

For those speculating on a potential CEO if a deal happens between US & HP, I believe it will be either Bruce Ashby or Doug Parker. The creditors will likely have a big say in this.

Never a dull moment in this business. If it were come to fruition, I cannot see United being very happy about US/AWA participating in the Star Alliance. IMHO, the menage trois of Skyteam Partners DL-NW-CO seems problematic. It would not surprise me to see a shift in partnerships as a result of a US/AWA combination. Perhaps it is wishful thinking on my part, but a reallignment seems possible.

Will the same happen to US? Don't know, but can't see why they would be different.

A merger between UA/US/HP won't happen - even under failing firm review, the DOJ and DOT would gleefully place "DENIED" stamps all over such a proposal.

Now I'm no marketing expert, but what does this mean? How do you keep one "brand in place" but use the other brand for its "name and market identity"? I thought brand WAS name and market identity?

The issue wasn't codesharing - it was the fact that MX cancelled its frequent-flyer relationship with UA - all Star partners are required to offer earning/redemption opportunities for all member carriers.
