With the average traveler(usually) checking 2 bags, and carrying "On" 2 others, this now becomes a situation of "4" bags being "checked IN"

This DOUBLES the work load beginning with the agents..thru....the guys/gals in the cargo bellys.

Because a "certain" NE station is operating with a "Micro Skeleton" workforce, the GM resorted to calling the FBO(fixed base operator), to send non union "workers" to work side by side with IAM ESE's. "A DEFINITE NO-NO"

Granted , the events of the last few days, have created this sudden "Change".

HOWEVER,

It's Managements JOB, to adequately staff the station,,by IMMEDIATELY posting openings for temporary or permanent ESE openings.

"What if NO one bids on the jobs"....(one might ask) ??

Then at the very least, the "closing date" for these class 2 stations should be extended by 6 months, or more.

NW "DOES" have that option, in the "new" contract.

Thoughts ???

Face it NW has all employee groups by the balls.
<_< ---- It's getting to the point where it really doesn't matter anymore! What do you think would happen to Northworst if all your F/A's just quit at the same time??? Think about it!---- Like I said, with what they are imposing on them now, it really doesn't matter! So who's got whom by the balls?

Bag counts here have gone up almost double (on average) the last two days...

They do have that option. You can make a viable case for keeping all but 3 or 4 open.

That aside, there are other options.

Immediate fix: Overtime as required, including freezing shifts, if necessary.

Short to medium fix: realign work schedules using new "flexibility" with regards to PT ESE's.

Medium to long term fix: Post positions in ACCESS for internal bidding. If that doesn't work, hire off the street. While that's in progress, solicit "mercenary temps" like they used to do over the holidays (usually 3 weeks in duration, and NW would give you per diem for food/hotel).

I would strongly suggest every ESE on the property grieve the manager's action(s). Our CBA may be a shadow of it's former self, but the scope clause is still in there.

Start out asking for 4 hous minimum, and go from there. By the way, this does have precedent....

I also read that several airlines are beginning to reduce the weight limit to 50 lbs. for checked bags down from 70 lbs. Has nwa signed on for this Kev? The article wasn't "airline specific".

Northwest itself hasn't, but KLM/AF and Alitalia have (other Skyteam partners may have as well; I'm not sure), so at least on itineraries involving those carriers the limit is capped at 50#.

...Meanwhile we're still loading bags going over the Pacific the size of Volkswagens.
