There was talk about picking up Air Canada's 2 -500s, but those have already been sold/leased to another airline. So which version of the A340 will be flying is US colors? I hope it's not the -300, because that airplane is under powered.

You have a type in a A340 cool <_< 🙄

BTW this is posted here under schedule.

Flew the A340 to Tahiti, it was a bit of a pig getting off the ground, but it was comfy and quiet inside. I still will be shocked to see a "four holer" in US colors.

Don't get too excited over a NEW addition to the fleet....believe it WHEN You SEE IT. Can't see it headed HERE.

I wonder where those 340-300s will be coming from? I'm assuming they will NOT be brand new from Airbus and will be acquired on the secondary market.

The A340-500 is a much better plane, in my opinion, for the China/Japan missions.

The A340-600 however, is too large a plane for US Airways.

Wow! You must have secret information.

What evidence convinced you that the -600 is too large an aircraft for US Airways? Do you work in US marketing? Do you know potential loads and cargo for the segments?

What if one could get a -600 for the same price as a -500, which one would you buy, and why or why not?

Post up some stats if you know what you're talking about 🙄

Here's some info so you can start the google hunt:

Our proposed nonstop service to Beijing will be flown by Airbus A340-300 aircraft, which seats 269 passengers in two classes, 42 in Envoy and 227 in Economy.

Also look up the difference between the 300 and the 300E B)

Did we forget that the BAE-146 was a "4-holer" 🙄. Although it was old USAir colors, it flew for awhile at USAir.

You gave the only statistic that matters - US is proposing the least capacity, except for AMR @ 245 seats in 3-class configuration and Maxjet @ 96 seats in all-business class configuration. Presumably, if US thought a bigger airplane was needed it would have been in the application.......

Do you know potential loads and cargo for the segments?

I have no idea about the amount of cargo they're predicting but if you scroll to page 58 of US 100+ page application to the DOT, you can see their predicted pax totals and load factor for the route.

Based on their numbers, they are calculating a load factor of about 77%, so I'd say a 346 is a bit too large for the route.

DOT Application

Usairways has ALWAYS been all about the smallest airplane between the biggest cities. What makes anyone think China would be any different? Take any large city pairs and you'll see all the other airlines with 767's and bigger with our 737's parked in the midst of them all. We'd take the 757 to china if they thought it could make it. Oh, I didn't know we had a marketing department....

Per the application on page 15, for initial service in March 2009 leased A340-300s will be utilized. As part of it's recent aircraft order A340-300s will be available from Airbus in May 2009.

Interesting to me that such "requests" are seat/class specific.

Would another approval be required to place a larger aircraft on that route?
