What's new

WN Fleet at 500 B737's

Was I talking about US Air? NO! I was pointing out America West was a "major" airline for years. Midwest has always been express, sub regional, and is not a "major". I am happy they offer you such great services, but good luck getting all over the world with them?! I am happy they give good customer service too, but there was a time when all the airlines that make up the "new" US Airways were just as great!! 😀
"Major" as defined by total revenue (like the DOT does)? Well, no, Midwest was/is not, and the old America West was. But while Midwest can't get you all over the world, neither could America West, save for some money losing Japan flights once upon a time. They could/can get you coast to coast, and your frequent flyer miles are good around the world (NW/KL now, in the past AA and VS). Just like HP could.

They code share with NWA for miles redemption so I can get quite a few places. Funny I can get from PHL to LAX, DFW, PHX, SEA & MSP, MCI from either PHL, EWR, BWI & LGA. I can also get to Iron Mountain, MI, can you even find it on the map?

Same price as US and better meals, seat pitch and fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. Not t mention serious customer service. Case in point. DFW to PHL, severe thunderstorms in MKE which I was unaware of. I go to the counter and the lady says, "I'm Sorry Mr Johnson but you're going to missconnect due to severe weather in MKE, so I have you booked on AA, see if you can get over there in time it's going to be close but I also protected you on the later flight so either way you'll be home tonight"

Now keep in mind that status wise I'm the Assistant Janitor on Midwest. Think that kind of service will ever happen in "Stepfordville" AKA PHX? Used to get that throughout the system as a CP, now thanks to all that frightening talent in Tempe I'm lucky to get a grunt.

Attracting what you wish.

And Mr. Johnson, do they not use Sabre? If WE had the tools to move the lines in a timely manner, we TOO could handle you in the correct fashion.

I've always started my Monday mornings by reading Michael Boyd's Monday Hot Flash. Interesting, this Monday's Hot Flash discusses many of the same comments included in this topic US Airways forum discussion about Southwest. After you read through the self promotion, Boyd provides some fact and prediction on how Southwest must change if it is to remain competative. Includes an interesting chart of Southwest's fall flight changes. Predicts Southwest will pull out of some markets including Manchester. An interesting read.

OHHHH, HERB. I bet he was downing Wild Turkey when he had that lightbulb moment----> "let's compete against the carrier with the HIGHEST COSTS"

then.........chase em from Calif, Florida, BWI...go UpState NY, and the final nail in the coffin, invade their priced Hubs of PHL and PIT.

It will certainly be interesting to see their next move to maintain any cost advantage.

Come on now.

I started here in BWI USair was shutting down operations here. There were vendors getting ready to shut down as we came in with our wopping 18 flights a day.

Now we have 170 plus and an brand new termial here in BWI but How much market share did we give you out of this airport?

Don't blame losses because of poor management on WN.

Remember Metro JET?

Oh I forgot "Mirror Image" as well.

U was custom made for southwest. Wn exists because of U.
No, Southwest exists because of the customer.

wow, you rock. I remember this trivia question from years and years ago. How many of the hundreds of airlines that started in the 80's are still operating. The answer said, Amer. West and Midway. No one ever challenged that answer until YOU.
You're right, Midwest started 11Jun, 1984.

Technically, that answer would have been wrong anyway, since (the original) Midway started operations in late 1979! They were the first post-deregulation new entrant to actually take to the sky.

Actually my point.
U couldn't and still can't get it's sh++ together. (pre and post merger with AWA.)
Constantly pulling out of places in which it seemed to have a strong hold (BWI was a Piedmont hub, long time ago) but then was unable to compete. Prices and service come to mind as the reasons to U lending a helping hand to WN. (U being somewhat managerially challenged. WN took market share.)
Some one else mentioned that U basically bought PSA and dismantled the system. Basically giving the west to the competition(including WN)and keeping their crappy, IMO, MD80s. I concur.
When the last Douglas was retired, we got another Doug. Er Parker.

Does it matter if the airline flies to Frankfurt when you only need to go to Fort Lauderdale?

sky high: copy/paste:

Carriers operated 5.2 million domestic and overseas flights during the January-June period of 2006, nearly 5 percent fewer than the first six months of 2005, according to data from 90 airlines.

The number of domestic flights fell while the frequency of international flights went up.

Nonstop flights overall were more than 3 percent longer and average trip length per passenger on all flights was up nearly 2 percent for the period that did not include the heaviest summer travel.

Airlines flying domestically have cut flights to save money and boost fares but most flights run full or nearly full. Those that fly internationally, like United Airlines , have boosted service on routes commanding "higher fares".

The domestic and international strategy resulted in increased "revenue" for the industry -- up 1.5 percent -- for the first six months despite sustained high fuel prices, figures show.

I am sincerely glad that a lot of people got to go to Frankfurt...but still, does it matter if an airline goes to Frankfurt if I only wanted to get to Fort Lauderdale?

it get to the point where who cares about WN. they have their problems like read the newspaper where they are cutting back service in PHL and holding off on airplane deliveries because of the economy and the price of fuel the fuel headging is coming to an end but of course you will never hear that WN has problems unlike CEO s of this company who suffer from diarreha of the mouth who go on MSNBC and other news outlets and love to chatter and say we run a SUBSTANDARD AIRLINE... WN has run out of places to go how many more flights does America need to Florida or Las Vegas thats why they are looking international with their partner ATA. good Heh WN maybe the north pole could use that 500th airplane
