I've lived in the South all my life. But if you look at it in one context - the fight for "reparations"...then yes, maybe it is time that we "got over" slavery. That isn't saying it is or was ever right - but it's been abolished for a hundred and fifty years. If anyone was owed reparations, it was those who suffered under slavery in the 1860's...but not someone who was born in the 1960's. If reparations are in order, how about including the descendents of Chinese laborers who built the railroads and lived in conditions similar to slavery?

I good friend of mine and I were talking about something or another a few years back right around the holidays and some pin head stuck his nose into the conversation and called her a ‘christ killer’. I could not believe my ears. I wanted to rip his head off but she told me to let it go. There will always be ignorance in the world and if I go around killing all the stupid people, the world will be a very lonely place. I believe she will get over it when you guys do.

As for what slavery has to do with people living today? I assume you are not including the fact that the Civil Rights Act was not passed till 1964 and that prior to that time, Blacks had separate drinking fountains, voting tax, segregated military (Red Tails from WWII), Brown V Board of Education (1954), and the list goes on. These all can trace a bee line to the slavery mentality which while legally abolished, still existed in various shapes and sizes.

Now I realize the reading skills of some are limited and since I am not clairvoyant I will refrain from reading more into the statement than was quoted and written. Having said that, can someone point out where reparations were mentioned?

The biggest problem I have with the actions (or lack there of) is that this nation has never (to my knowledge) made an official apology to those we have screwed over. While I realize it will not change history, an official proclamation would go a long way in my book if I were one of those wronged.

I think this nation should do quite a bit more for the native americans in terms of drug addiction and vocational training (get them out of the casino biz). We need to invest more in the inner city schools where most of the poor (Caucasians included) go to school. Their education and facilities does not even come close to comparing to those fortunate enough to be born in the right zip code.

If we are sincere in our wish to have a even society and afford all people the same opportunities, then we need to make sure it really does exist.

I mentioned it, only because it is still a somewhat "hot topic" in the south...the place you had said that there was little wonder "we" still make fun of the south, although I'm not sure who "we" are.

I'm fairly liberal minded, but I do get tired of hearing this "reparations" talk...I'm sure other southerners do as well. Because my family roots don't go back to Tara or some plantation...they go back to Appalachia - which wasn't really known for it's slaveholding population.

And I take exception to your "we" making fun of the south. I was born and raised in the south...1957. Grew up with separate water fountains and everything. Also grew up with the civil rights movement. And also grew up learning that if I treated anyone with disrespect, no matter what their color, I'd have hell to pay at home. So your generalization of southerner's is not appreciated by me.

I read in a book by Lewis Grizzard (a southern humorist)about the time he moved to Chicago. He caught a cab driven by a black man, and in the course of the discussion, Grizzard said he was from Atlanta. The cabbie said he was from Atlanta also...and Grizzard braced himself for the civil rights talk. Only thing was, that driver said at least in the South, you knew where you weren't wanted...up north they won't SAY you can't go or aren't welcome...but if you do go there, they'll kick the #### out of you. He said given his druthers - he preferred at least KNOWING.

Having said that, the comments that were made seem to fit the stereo typical image that people have of the old south. Right or wrong, it is what is believed by a decent number of people. The likes of Jessy Helms, David Duke and now this pin head do very little to change that image to the rest of the world.

While I am not questioning your respect for others or your up bringing, the fact still remains that there were no lynchings taking place in Los Angeles. Rosco P Coaltrain and Buford T Johnson are not depicted as "northern" cops but southern ones. I am not saying that they images are correct, I suspect they are far from it. How ever with the likes of those mentioned above, the image of the south is not being helped very much.
