My whole point is this. If they were to rerun an old Amos n Andy episode, there would be an outcry that it was racist and stereotyped blacks. But put on a show about a boneheaded southern sheriff, and while it's stereotyping - it's acceptable enough to make a movie out of it. And...I only point out Rodney King in response to the "you don't see lynchings in LA" comment. You do. You also see black kids beaten to a pulp by white kids in NYC and Boston. If stereotyping is bad - then it should be bad for stereotyping southerner's as well.

It is bad, get over it. 😛

Having lived in the south (GA, TN, NC, and Bama), there are simply places that 'anyone' should not wander into (ethnically wise-all cases).

As for what slavery has to do with people living today? I assume you are not including the fact that the Civil Rights Act was not passed till 1964 and that prior to that time, Blacks had separate drinking fountains, voting tax, segregated military (Red Tails from WWII), Brown V Board of Education (1954), and the list goes on. These all can trace a bee line to the slavery mentality which while legally abolished, still existed in various shapes and sizes.

Actually the military was integrated long before the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Harry Trumman mandated it in 1948 by executive order.

I stand corrected on military integration.

How ever I feel my point still stands. An implication was made earlier in the thread that slavery was a thing of the ancient past that does not affect anyone today. Given that the Civil Rights Act was not passed till 1964, there are people alive today who are directly affected by it.

those alive today who endured the ugly racism pre-civil rights deserve an apolgy by our Government, however repariations for slavery is not something that is even justifiable. first how would you propose this to be handled? seek out the family lines that held slaves and make them pay? or should all americans bear the financial burden? many americans immigrated to this country after the abolishment and never had anything to do with slavery, should they also pay? If anybody should have to pay perhaps we should hold the ones who created the market in the first place (Africans) accountable.

The African slave trade has existed for thousands of years and in fact continues to this day.

Should your childrens, children, be responsible for your crimes and transgressions Gar?

I agree, as in anywhere!
There are places in SF that one might not want to enter wearing chaps with no pants, but that is another issue.

I read an op/ed piece a long time ago. The issue is not important but the author made a very good distinction. He stated that there is a difference between collective guilt and collective responsibility. I am a first generation american. While I (nor my family) were guilty of the crimes of this countries, as americans, we are responsible. Responsible for our adopted countries heritage, both the good and the bad. I have news for you Local, our actions today will be remembered by those that we affect. A friend of mine is a child of survivors. They get a check every month from Germany as ‘pay back’ for being interred in a concentration camp. They will get this check till they day they die. Mot of the Germans who are alive today and paying taxes to their government were not alive during WWII much less part of the Nazi party. Yet they still pay. They are not guilty, but they are responsible. You, me and everyone else who is a US citizen is responsible for the actions taken by this government in our name.

I honestly do not care who or how the selling of humans started. It is reprehensible and anyone who partakes in it is morally bankrupt. Reparations are certainly due in my opinion, but alas, far too much time has passed for it to be a practical venture. On that we can agree.

OK then sign me up for the freebies, my family immigrated from Ireland to escape the oppression of England and starvation only to find it as equally appalling when first arriving in America. They were descriminated against and forced to do the jobs no one else would if they were to eat, that is if they could find work....'Irish need not apply'... ring any bells Gar? Even the blacks had a term for the Irish,...'white ******'...so I guess im due reparations as 'pay back' huh? heck lets not stop there, the chinese came next, then the Italians, and so on! every group of immigrants that followed the previous were treated harshly and descriminated against in this country.

You use Germany as an example which is a no brainer, the survivors and the children of those murdered in death camps should be compensated but should that apply Ad Infinitum?

Its no wonder liberalism is called a mental illness!

Like original sin we all fall short and it sure isn't in the government’s name.

This guy’s reasoning is so twisted it’s at the perverted angle and exactly why when many with this mental illness come together the entire nation is in dire straights.

This soul the enemy owns, anyone who can see knows this.

As I thought we both agreed, it is not a practicle issue to dole out reparations to those who were wronged by this country. As a side note, the main reason it was particle for the Germans to do so was the fact that they were organized to a fault. They kept ledgers of exactly who was taken where and when so there was very little doubt about who was involved and who was not. That is not the case for the Irish, blacks, Italians, Natives .. etc. so as I stated early it is not a practical issue to even think about reparations to other groups. I am not sure why you keep going back to that issue.

What I would like to see this country do as a form of pay back is to start building up the inner cities. To start investing in the schools, day cares, libraries, community centers and such. The benefit would be two fold. First, it would help give those who are not as economically privileged an equal chance at the american dream by giving them access to the same level of education and such that those who live in 90210 have access to. Second, by giving people hope and access, there is a good chance that the crime levels will go down as well.

What’s with the insults? Do you think that supports your point better? I will argue issues with you all day long. I am a liberal and I am proud of that fact. Your opinion not with standing.
