Charlotte Cancels All Arrivals

This would be a normal day in PIT.
Every time a big nor-easter clobbers CLT, DCA, PHL, NY, and BOS - PIT is unaffected.
Maybe it wasn't such a bad place after all.....just overpriced.
Cheers.

Problem is people/business's in PHX do not have the money to travel like folks in CLT.. they live in a DESERT!

US flights are bypassing their CLT arrival and going straight to the destinations from outlying stations to have planes in position for the AM flights and are expecting to operate a full schedule in CLT tomorrow.

There is a lot of factors that determine if a city is a profitable airline hub.  CLT is great no doubt but PHX has plenty of folks with deep pockets too and has roughly twice the population of CLT for more o&d traffic. But then their is swa competing their also and its more of a leisure market..again lots of factors to the equation.

PHX is not in a useful location to serve as a hub, and the airport setup is even worse for a hub.

Just had to say: Great picture 700UW! Where did you take this from?

apparently the Germans have better connections with the city, smarter management or both

yesterday I parked LHR in an arctic wasteland on D10 but before the Germans arrived on D12 a fleet of city plows shows up and cleans the gate off like Air Force One was coming in

The Winners And Losers Of The US Airways, American Merger

Winner: Phoenix Sky Harbor
The commitment to maintain all of the pre-merger hubs is mostly a formality, except in the case (potentially) of Phoenix. Some analysts have suggested that Phoenix, which is a low yielding hub with a major competitive presence from Southwest, could get squeezed out in the combined carriers network by Dallas Fort Worth to the east and Los Angeles to the west. At the very least, it was certain that the current operation would have been downsized. (My projection was for about a 33% capacity reduction and a decrease in daily departures to 250 from 300, achieved by flipping the current mainline to regional ratio of 2:1) But now? Well see whether the commitment to maintain the Phoenix hub consistent with historical operations can be enforced by the DOJ. But if it can, it guarantees that Phoenix will stay as a hub for at least three more years. And the interesting undercurrent here is that Southwests costs are rising, which means that the competitive environment in Phoenix could be a whole lot rosier three years from now.

Loser: International Operations at Charlotte Douglas
Because the merger has gone through, much of the international operations at the Charlotte Douglas hub are rendered obsolete. The recent trans-Atlantic expansion was primarily to Star Alliance hubs, which will likely die out when US Airways moves over to one world. Most of the Caribbean flights and the flight to Rio are much better served from the much larger market of Miami. To be clear, Charlotte will not lose its hub. But its post-merger international operation will be much smaller than it is currently.

Well if they downsize PHX 33% and then take away the 20-25% of the east routes the fly... that would hurt, start looking for a realtor or just walk away from your bank!

Lets see the same can be said about BWI, DAY, IND, PIT, SYR, MIA, for US.

And lets see how many other hubs have been downsized over the years.

DFW, MCO, SJC, RDU, GSO, STL, MCI, IAD, CMH,  I know these are other airlines, but there are plenty of more cities that have lost hub status over the years.
