However, as I mentioned in the rest of the post that you quoted, research operations at every level in this country are all too quick to chase the government dollars and focus their research in those areas. IMHO, the problem is that they're too risk averse these days and would rather burn through government dollars than their own when it comes to researching new treatments.

The result??? If the government doesn't put its stamp of approval on a particular area of research in the form of some grant dollars, then the private sector generally doesn't do it, either.
