Bush's support for gay rights is not unlike that of other Republicans, notably her mother Laura Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney. Former Republican presidential candidate John McCain opposes same-sex marriage, but his wife, Cindy, and daughter, Meghan, also have done public service announcements for the "No H8" campaign and supported repeal of the don't ask, don't tell rule against gays openly serving in the military.

Court orders immediate end to ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’

The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the U.S. government must immediately stop enforcing the military ban on openly gay service, despite the Pentagon's insistence it needs time to gradually implement the change.

The military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy is back in place for the time being, with one major caveat: the government is not allowed to investigate, penalize or discharge anyone who is openly gay.

A group of U.S. service members marched in a San Diego gay pride parade on Saturday, in a demonstration organizers touted as an unprecedented step for gay and lesbian military personnel under the Pentagon's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.

The military contingent in the parade numbered about 250 people, and the former Navy operations specialist who brought the group together said many are currently in the military, while the rest are veterans. They dressed in civilian clothes.

Marine Corporal Will Rodriguez-Kennedy is on active duty and said he looks forward to next year's parade, when he believes it will be possible to march in "dress blues."
