Anyone who has any doubts whatsoever about the integrity of American Airlines won't want to miss The Crash of Flight 191 on the History Channel tonight. It will be repeated again next week.

Skip the personal attacks.

The program is worth watching, is factual, and it does indeed say a lot about American Airlines.

I would say it is more a comment on corporate mentality. If you think any corporation would not do the same thing (Ford and the Pinto, Enron just to name two) you are living in a fantasy world.

Garfield is right, when it comes to Loss of Life Big Corporations will pass the buck, stall, or even cover up in order to protect the bottom line. Hey if the liability cost get high enough they can alwys stroll thru bankruptcy court and start over!.......only in AMERICA.

I watched the program for the first time last night, and I was floored on how AA treated the survivors families in this horrible accident. Although, I was not surprised, as AA management treats its employees in much the same way.

Its another indication how low AA management will go. The situation has not changed 25 years later. "Pull together, Win together?" Yeah right.....

The entire point of the program's presentation, which many may not be able to see between the frames, is how horribly AA used and abused their mechanics to hide the fact that they were forcing them to use un-recommended maintenance methods in order to save a buck. (Mechanics would be very well justified in keeping that fact in mind when AA comes knocking for another concession). Mechanics took the blame for much of what happened while the corporate raiders who ordered the violations remained shielded, and well compensated.

Pushing that mechanic to the point that he couldn't bear the burdon of knowing the maintenance he was forced to perform was directly responsible for the deaths of 272 people troubled him so, and to the point that he actually took his own life (although, I have my doubts) and with him died the truth. It was then and only then that AA agreed to "share" the liability with McDonnell Douglas who, in my estimation, was not liable at all, but with the death of this mechanic, MD was no longer able to prove that it was all AA's fault, not MD. It was American's dancing around standard, recommended and mandatory maintenance protocol that was at fault. MD should have counter-sued the daylights out of AMR, especially in light of the fact that AA got caught red-handed shredding evidence. That judge should have jailed them all!

This program was well put together and told the story from all angles. It wasn't out to get any one single entity. The only reason American Airlines came out stinking to high heaven was because they did stink in not only their shoddy maintenance practices, but the absolute zero value they put on the lives of those employees and passengers who were killed; AA simply didn't care, and made no big secret of the fact that they made a whopping 25 Million dollar profit off of that crash. So in essence, even though they were guilty as hell, they traded 272 lives for a big fat insurance check, and they got away with it.

Confidendial to Imagolfer: How much does AA pay you to play spin-doctor in their behalf on message boards? You sound much like the exact type of employee AA likes to have around, just in case the occasion arises when they need employees who will be good little drones and blindly do things like, lie to judges, shred documents, hide evidence and . . . . Nevermind, you're just not worth it!

But isn't cost and the almighty dollar the most important thing to consider when it comes to safety and aircraft maintenance?

I have been subjected to many threats of loss of job and career lately if maintenance cost are not brought down.

There is even a video out that the TWU and AA Management made together that is nothing more than a cost cutting or else announcement.

I knew "Red" Marshall for a number of years before he went to TUL, and he was not noted for suffering in silence. If he saw a wrong, he either fixed it, fought it, or spoke out against. I would question that he took his own life.

It wasn't just AA that was doing the pylon work in that fashion. Both CO and UA had been using a forklift to remove everything at one time. It just happened to AA first. Had there not been the intense scrutiny, I bet either CO or UA, if not both would have had an accident shortly there after.

As far as the Corporation hiding stuff, they all do it. The almighty $$ rules and if it isn't going to work in your favor, lie, steal, or cheat. We all just choose to believe that they will do what is right for the greater good of man, but they won't.

It says a lot about American Airlines as it existed in 1979; inasmuch as almost none of the decision-makers from that era are with AA anymore, it really says very little about AA in 2005.

Similarly, the failed Iran Hostage rescue mission in 1980 said a lot about the state of our military in that year; it has nothing to do with our military capabilities or preparedness in 2005.

I Think you are missing the point FWAAA, When corners are cut to save time and money and especially in such an industry as ours it will be just a matter of "when" and not "IF'' a tragedy occurs. Sadly that is exactly what is transpiring with the Airlines today and Im certain history will repeat itself. Once again it will take the Tragic loss of life before things are righted!

Anyone know the day and time this is going to be replayed? Also, it was on the History channel, right?

Actually, I no longer work for AA. I decided to take a Voluntary Leave last December after 14 1/2 years...started as a gate agent, and spent the last 12 years in...yes....MANAGEMENT. I left AA with no ill will, in fact I am still a big AA fan. What kills me about AA, is people like you with such hatred for their company (or ex-company). Move on, worry about much bigger things than something that happend 26 years ago, or how Arpey is leading AA.

Geeez, no wonder you guys need a Union, you don't work, and just complain all day long 🙁
