1978 PI sked in ATL

Actually, the LYH-CLT legs would have most likely been on PI - US didn't serve CLT till after the US/PI merger.

My bad, it was definitely Piedmont. I think the first time I flew on USAir was after I moved to DFW and flew them DFW-CLT and some Express partner on a Dash-8 CLT-LYH.

Arent there more Express flights now than Mainline in the whole system?

I remember ROA being so much bigger than LYH. They had jetways, too. 🙂

ROA certainly did have a considerable PI operation in the 1970s and 1980s, but I can tell you that ROA didn't have jetways in the old airport terminal at all. ROA's jetways appeared around 1988 or 1989 when the new airport terminal was built. Prior to that, most PI gates were to the left of security screening and other carriers (Air Virginia and Best, for example) were to the right of screening. All of these "gates" were simply holding rooms with PI blue chairs and pax walked out on the apron to the aircraft and walked up stairs to board. All of PI's aircraft had self-contained airstairs (737 at the front and 727s in the rear) and only a few times did I see airstairs pushed up to the aircraft.

Really? I could have sworn ROA had jetways the one or two times we used that airport. One time we flew UA out of IAD and got to ride the moon buggies. Maybe I was thinking of SHV as the small airport with jetways. I wanted to fly to GGG (our true destination, halfway between SHV and DFW) but I guess it was too expensive. I finally did fly to GGG a couple of years ago even though I really didn't have to, just to say I've flown there.

I can remember flying on PI into ROA shortly after the merger in '87, but before the new terminal opened (IIRC it was under construction). I remember boarded using airstairs. There were no jetways.
