A report by advocacy group Veterans for America said the mental healthcare system at Fort Drum was not meeting the demands placed on it and had prepared inadequately for the return of more than 3,500 soldiers from Iraq late last year.

"Even though we knew this group were coming back from their 4th deployment and there would be these problems, we still had massive waits of two months (for appointments)," Veterans for America spokeswoman Adrienne Willis said.

Why should treatment even be an option? Every single soldier coming off the boat or plane should be required to be checked out by a shrink with in one week of arrival. No one, not a single soldier should have to wait 2 months for an appointment for anything. If we have to pay a war tax to fund it, so be it. Bush and Cheney started this mess. Lets use some of those oil revenues to pay the cost of treating our vets who saved that oil. OH wait, there are not oil revenues are there. My bad.

Like it or not...they always have been one issue voters and they won't change.

GOP core has lost their way just like the Dem's.Neither party stands for much of anything anymore.
GOP has no spine while the Dem's campaigned on false promises and now have accomplished nothing much since taking control.

They find solace in addictive/destructive past times.....until they come to grips with their selves they won't get help.So how is it they are left on the side of the road?

Very true Dude, but not for the same reasons. After the elation of survival comes the guilt of survival. A soldier carries a lot of guilt and our society does not understand it. They speak in platitudes and theorize what a human being does in the face of a combatant.

Which goes back to the point that we will spend billions to give them weapons of war (very glamorous don't you know) but we hardly spend a diam (in comparison) to help bring them back into society and help them adjust or help them deal with what they have seen and done in combat. Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling that makes me want to join up ... or not.

I'm somewhat aware of the guilt you refer to.....and I hold the utmost respect for you and those who committed. 😉

Somewhat akin to the tornado victim whose house is the only one on the block as all his neighbors lost theirs.

To me,I see the VA medical system somewhat as a harbinger to what may come our way for healthcare.....

But of course....Nancy,Harry and Barry won't let it go that way.... :mf_boff:

Perhaps if those who put yellow ribbons on their SUV's and have signs that say 'support our troops' were to actually do something thing may change. Perhaps if a POTUS actually had to pay for his war things might change. Perhaps if people actually had to make a sacrifice instead of being told to 'go shopping' things might change.

Politicians are not going to change anything. 8 yrs of W with 6 yrs of a republican Congress did not improve this nation. A few years of Dems in charge certainly will not be able to reverse what was done and will not make this nation any better either.

Not sure what you mean by harbinger. Have you been to a county hospital? Only the rich and those with good health insurance get adequate medical treatment. The poor and uninsured get what's left over. Capitalism at work or what is other wise known as 'Survival of the fittest'.
