Anyone here know the status of the conversion? Apparently one 333 has been completed; probably not too likely my DL 230 BOS-AMS next month will be on that aircraft. Unlike the 764, 777ER and 744 mods it seems this one is going at a snails pace.

id imagine that the 330s probably be completed by end of next yr but who knows but it could be done as each aircraft goes in for a check up

Work on the first one has started, and the A/C will be back in service come mid-April.

Another 12 (a mix of both -200's & -300's) will be done by the end of this year, and the balance of the fleet(s) are slated to be completed by summer 2014...

FWIA just one A330-300 and one A330-200 will be completed before summer and then start up again in the fall.
I believe this a/c mod will be more "intense" as they will also be receiving new galley's as well.

Thanks Kev and BABABOOY for the info. Just curious: does DL perform these mods inhouse or is it performed by MROs overseas?

Josh

DL has been outsourcing all their interior mods.

I believe most of their fleet was done overseas.

DL intended to do one of each of the 330s as a prototype for the fleet to allow time to identify issues of the type which have cropped up w/ every other interior mod. They hope they can use the summer to troubleshoot any problems and correct them and then rapidly work the rest of the 330 fleet.
They should finish the 330 mods by next summer rather than the end of the year.

The primary focus now is to finish the 767 fleet which should happen after summer.

Obviously, mod work drops to a trickle over the summer when every possible aircraft is pressed into service.

DL is somehow managing to either do a whole lot more work than what was outsourced or it is insourcing a whole lot of work, but DOT data shows that DL added 1,000 personnel to Tech Ops in 2011. 2012 data has not been released.

DL also reported for 2012 that it spent $2B to maintain its fleet; 38% of that figure (based on 2011 percentages) was outsourced - or about $750M. But DL also that it gets more than $500M from insourced maintenance.

Even without its MRO business, DL's outsourcing percentage is lower than AS, B6, UA, US, and WN.
DL's effective outsourcing percentage is less than 15% when you factor in its MRO business which is a smaller percent of outsourcing than any other large US airline.

1 333 and 1 332 are being done somewhere in Asia before the summer season. The rest of the fleet will be wrapped up before S14.
777/747/764 are done. 763s will have about 15ish frames to do after the summer. (all the 76Z fleet will be done. Rest of the work will be 76G(convert to 76Z) and 76Ls) 757 mods will start after summer AFAIK.

All work is being done by someone not Delta.

Ah i have missed this. I do enjoy telling you how wrong you are though.
1) no one asked or said a word about hiring. Why do you always try to fluff up your post. Delta does a s**t ton of outsourcing. Those 1000 people? times that by ~15 if they did the major of Delta work in house. No telling what kind of MRO that would bring in if they had the even lower cost base to do even more MRO HMVs. Plus the engine work that could come if they had engines like the GE90, V2500 and PW4000-100 in fan.
2)quit counting the MRO work toward the outsourcing number. It doesn't matter how many Air force 757s get HMVs or UPS 767 get winglets or FedEx PW4000s get overhauled or HA 767 get painted.......fact is none of that is Delta work. Some of the work talked about would likely multiply if Delta work was done in house and cost were lowered even more.
3) How many lay-offs are we going to take when most of the MRO work (and then the Delta work they aren't cutting, just like they aren't cutting HMVs or Dallas or Tampa) moves to the new hangar in mexico?
4) United does send more work out, but they also beat the pants off of Delta's benefits. Now, I'm more of a jobs guy myself, but they have 3 more weeks of vacation, 3-5% lower health care cost, scope and 200 more bucks of pay after union dues...... hard to blame them.
5) How many of the companies listed are building a hangar in Mexico? Now how many of them are bring in tons of contractors into the main MX base?

Ok go a head and tell me how its all roses. While you do that I am going to dust off the lube from BK and start getting ready for project Mexico/Contractor.

edit: just to add, the majority of the adds in 2011 was because Delta....mainly NW...was so understaffed. Of course we have been expecting more big time hiring with all the early outs but it hasn't happens. More contractors are showing up in ATG. I guess that is good for Delta AMTs/ASMs right WT?

Odd that people are hitting you with negative numbers.

Anyways, yes. all of the widebody work is being done in Asia. (mostly SIN and HKG but I believe some 777 work was done in TPE)
Also most of the mod work done on domestic planes have been done by vendors (ie MD90s by AAR) or done at a Delta hangar by contractors. (ie Wifi)
