AA is testing on 2 super80's a mesh see through cabin divider curtain. In an attempt to slow the amount of people moving through the FC cabin.

Glad to hear AA is trying this solution. Gotta keep the masses out of the front cabins.

My experience is that a simple PA and a FA who is monitoring the cabin VS tucked against the door reading a people magazine works better than any curtain could.

I disagree. I fly one all the time and I make the PA, the capt. makes the PA and people still come up. I tell them to go to the back and they act like they have never heard it before and get all bent out of shape. Truth be told, people hear what they want to hear and ignore the rest.

US has the mesh curtain and it works great. It definitely keeps down the traffic.

Well, I sure don't want anyone to lose any valuable reading time. 😀

Actually, in my post-curtain flights, doesn't seem to matter how often the PAs are made - the FAs are stretched thin and simply can't patrol the aisles while they hustle to serve drinks, warm nuts, appetizers, dinner and sundaes. While that big production is going on, urchins from the back (and even some grown-up unwashed masses) sneak up the aisles and use the forward lavs. Every time.

Needn't be a curtain - perhaps a theater-type velvet rope would do it.

Now, if only we could get that shower curtain electrified to assure that the plebes don't try more than once to use F/C lav.

Not to knock 'em unconscious or anything. Just to get their attention. Like those invisible fences for pets.

no, Jim too much trouble. just announce that the curtain is electrified as a 'security measure'

after awhile, dogs don't know that the thing around his neck is just a two rolls of pennies you've duct taped to his collar.

I think we have already established the fact that no one listens to the PAs. Like Missourians, they have to be shown.

I said the other day after making the "wheels first" PA for the umpteenth time that being a FA makes you understand how St. John the Baptist felt...Just a voice crying in the wilderness.

Wouldn't the costs associated with these mesh curtains be better utilized somewhere else? I thought we were trying to save money instead of spend it..Also, if we have gone this long without the curtain why the sudden need for such a divider?

What Unity?

A joke one day we pretended there was an invisible force field dividing the cabin. Went up to it felt it like a mime and then just moved away. Used the car key button to control it when there was a seat belt check, click on click off.

Just announce that it is electric and have a number 3 touch it and jump back and say "ouch" that should help control; some of the cross through.

Jim, pray tell [pun intended] what is a "wheels first" PA. I'm sure after 50 years of AA flying and 3mm AAdvantage Miles (thankfully not all BISM) I have heard this PA, but "wheels first"? Is this the PA at "rotation" or "wheels up"

"No one listens" is obviously hyperbole. In my case it depends on whether the “safetyâ€￾ PA is live or taped. If taped I don’t listen or watch unless I am on equipment with which I have not recently flown or am otherwise unfamiliar. But if live, I always listen, for many reasons such as accent, enunciation, speaking ability and matching the voice to the person, particularly when in First. I only watch a FA doing the demonstration when appearance has captured my attention.

I have always favored ‘segregation’ of lavs by airplane seating class. Thus if "safety" concern results in mesh curtains to achieve it, then so be it!

Apparently you don't listen to the PAs either. 😀

"Wheels first" refers to placing bags in the overhead bins wheels first instead of longways; many AA narrowbody bins now accept (and have for several years) standard rollaboards wheels first, practically doubling their capacity. The bin expansion program was announced in about 1998 or so, and has extended to all 738s, many 757s and many MD-80s (on the DEF side of super 80s, IIRC).

FAs have been reminding pax that the bins will hold many bags wheels first but largely to no avail.

Passengers just don't listen. 😛

AFAIK, all S80s have been converted to the expanded o/h bins on the DEF side. I think I saw a broadcast message recently that said the conversion was complete on the S80 fleet. I did fly on a 752 (former TW a/c) recently though that was not converted yet.
