I prefer to fly UA and have found an internationl fare on their website @$665.00.

However,I have found a Northwest Airline fare $425.00

Does anyone know, if United Airlines would do an International price match?

I hope not. The UA fare may very well be higher because UA has already sold out the fare bucket that contained the $425 fare. UA and NW likely had the same fares on your route, but UA is probably selling better than NW. Having sold out of the cheaper fare class, UA is now poised to charge more for the remaining seats, and UA needs to do that to survive. If that's the case, there's no reason to sell you a seat at the cheaper price.

NW still has seats for sale in that fare bucket for a variety of reasons but one important one is the scab maintenance that NW now uses to maintain its fleet.

I don't fly on airlines experiencing labor disputes/disruptions in their maintenance department, and I don't understand why anyone else would, either.

Have a great trip.

Hi

Thanks for the reply, great forum BTW.

I should have mentioned in my post, my dates for travel 02/09/2007 - return 02/12/2007.

Altough a long way off, big difference in price

I would also hope that UAL not match the fare. It's getting to a point where the consumer is going to have to accept the fact that airlines are not a "not for profit" business. How much profit is NWA making on that $425 fare? I don't know where you are travelling, but IMHO, $665 to fly you across an ocean is pretty darn good. Add to that the fact that NWA is still in bankruptcy, and your trip is a long way off...What happens if NWA liquidates before your trip date? I'd consider the extra $200 as "insurance" that you'll be able to fly when you plan to fly.

Considering that NW doesn't fly to LHR, I'd rethink slapping down ANY $$.. 😛

That's why they are cheaper, they aren't going to the most popular airport. AA.com shows LHR-JFK $598.00 nonstop for your dates. if you are starting on JFK, it is considerably cheaper. Same dates JFK-LHR $398.00

Thanks for your reply, help, & advice.

I prefer to fly UA due to their mileage programme; however, I am flexible with any of the code share carriers, although I cannot find a fare cheaper than that I originally quoted.

I thought this would be straightforward; trying to book this far in advance; however, it’s becoming a nightmare trying to find the best deal.

As started, I do appreciate all the advice offered.

Also consider that NW does NOT have a nonstop, whereas UA does. LGW-DTW-JFK, or possibly LGW-AMS-JFK is much more hassle than a nonstop flight. We have a better schedule, better service, and better aircraft than NW, therefore the price is more.

Also westbound Atlantic fares are set in Frankfurt Germany by Lufthansa, NOT UA. Part of the Atlantic Plus alliance.
