AirTran Airways Reports Record January Traffic

AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: AAI), today reported record traffic for the month of January 2006. Revenue passenger miles and enplaned passengers represent records for the month of January.

AirTran Airways' traffic, measured by revenue passenger miles (RPMs), grew by 25.7 percent, to more than 922 million RPMs, on an increase of 28.3 percent in capacity, based on available seat miles (ASMs). The airline enplaned 1,347,515 passengers in the month of January, a 25.8 percent increase from January 2005 and a record for the month of January.

"Our January results give us significant momentum as we start 2006," said Robert L. Fornaro, AirTran Airways' president and chief operating officer. "As we stated in our earnings call last week, we are confident of continued double digit unit revenue improvement in the first quarter."

Am I the only one who's surprised to see a system-wide LF in the mid-60s? I know those 717s are efficient, but this seems too low to make any money, even for an LCC, especially in the current fuel cost environment.
