AirTran Holdings, Inc., Expects to Report Small First Quarter Profit
Tuesday April 10, 1:56 pm ET


ORLANDO, Fla., April 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AirTran Holdings, Inc., (NYSE: AAI - News), the parent company of AirTran Airways, Inc., today is reporting the following information relating to the first quarter 2007:

-- First quarter revenue per available seat mile (RASM) is expected to be
slightly better than our latest guidance of down 1-2 percent.
-- Non fuel cost per available seat mile (CASM) continues to improve and
should decline in excess of our latest guidance of down approximately 3

percent in the quarter.
-- All in-fuel costs should be within a range of from $2.00 per gallon to
$2.03 per gallon.

Commenting on the updated guidance Stan Gadek, AirTran's senior vice president and chief financial officer said, "We are encouraged by our recent revenue and cost performance." Gadek went on to say, "As a result of this improved performance, the company now expects to report a small profit for the first quarter."

I'm surprised, considering that all I had heard, until now, was loss, loss, loss (albeit a small one). I don't think a small profit will have any bearing on the attempted takeover. The only difference this will make is that we'll (perhaps) hear less from Midwest how we're "desparate" and "struggling". If we report a profit AND they report a loss, that may be a different story...
 
Congrats on the profit. As we all know, the first quarter is typically a slower one, and with the weather issues everybody dealt with earlier this year, any profit is a welcome one.

Now that we've reported a profit AND they've reported a profit, look for the May 16th (?) "deadline" to be extended, and the highschool-like "he said/she said" banter to continue. :boring:

The grunts in the trenches will continue to run both airlines, while the leaders focus on more important matters. :rolleyes:
