WARWICK, R.I. (AP) --An American Airlines (AMR) plane bound for Chicago was evacuated Wednesday at T.F. Green Airport after fumes were detected onboard.

Passengers were taken off the plane, an MD-80, before it took off, said airport spokeswoman Patti Goldstein.

Goldstein said a "very small number of passengers" were taken to an area hospital for evaluation. She didn't immediately have an exact number of passengers on the plane, the number being treated, or the name of the hospital where they were taken.

The flight number also wasn't immediately available.

Television reports said it was diesel-fuel odors that forced the evacuation.

Goldstein said passengers would board a replacement plane for Chicago.

There are two access panels to the center wing fuel tanks that are under the cabin floor. A lot of extra work goes into sealing these two but it sure sounds like one was leaking!!
