What's new

And so it begins

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines Inc (NYSE😀AL - News) has started merger talks with both Northwest Airlines Corp (NYSE:NWA - News) and United Airlines parent UAL Corp (NasdaqGS:UAUA - News), and hopes to reach an agreement with one of them over the next two weeks, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

Wow, that is fast!

Just started merger talks and hope to have an agreement within two weeks.

Anderson is playing his hand like a Champion !!

Conventional wisdom would dictate that the #1 deal is with NW,.....BUT, if NW, due to Brutal resistance from the unions , makes thing too difficult, Anderson turns and does a "180" to an eagerly awaiting UAL.

A UAL/DL deal, brings NO significant union resistance from ual, because the MAJORITY of the total "new" DL brings more than 50% of the employees(F/A's-AMT's/FSC's) ALREADY union(from UAL)

Alpa pilots(from both) would dovetail.

The "ABOVE" then pits NW and CO, leaving NW the survivor, with a (CO) Non-union Customer service and Ramp group, ...........which, depending on the numbers in each of the two group, ........."might" ultimately leave the "new" NW with a non-union ramp and CS group. (If the "latter" is the case, I still think that the two groups WOULD get enough total votes to go ALL Union)

Again, I cannot say it ENOUGH,..........Anderson is playing his hand like a "texas hold em" CHAMP !!!!!!

Not knowing that much about Anderson, but about DAL culture, If Anderson wants to be all non - union except pilots, he would choose NWA.. However, Anderson is taking a major risk, UAL doesnt NEED DAL - In fact I think it would be better off with CAL. NWA can very easily hook up with CAL and UAL can hook up with JBLU or USAIR.. Or continue as a standalone, Leaving DAL to bite the dust, so to speak... NWA is already getting alot of flack from MN officials.. DAL knows it would not be in total control with a UAL deal, therefore it will probably pick NWA where it will have more control... It will definitely be interesting.

Sorry NHBB, (and I usually have a neutral opinion on your posts) but........
Its funny how somebody on the sidelines can get so excited over a CEO thats trying to merge two airlines. I guess since you dont work for either airline at the present time, you wont feel the anxiety of maybe losing a career, losing a home, or having to move. I've seen enough heartache with Eastern (employed 1982 - 1989), and I saw what happened to my friends at Pan Am (both hometown airlines headquartered n Miami). Employed with NWA since 1989 and going thru the roller-coaster ride that is the airline industry, their are a few of us that would rather not go thru a painful round of consolidation. Good luck to the Delta employees, United employees and to my fellow Northwest employees.

PS I'm venting, and please no chest-beaters, their all great airlines with rich histories... hopefully they can continue to survive independently.

Hey, I'm not a cheerleader for consolidation because I want to see good people lose their jobs; I'm a fan of consolidation because I want to see good people have a chance to work for a profitable airline instead of working for money-losing airlines.

We've got six full network airlines trying to be all things to all people and it just ain't working. They combine into three, cut some hubs and duplicate capacity, and perhaps profitability might be achievable.

While even WN employs some whiners, employees at consistently profitable airlines tend to be happier than those at money-losers. When your employer is consistently profitable, it's generally easier to demand and get raises. When your employer is consistently unprofitable, the only question is "how much more will the company demand in concessions this time?" And if some people have to be cut loose to get there, that may be a good thing in disguise.

Airlinelifer,

Thank you for posting !

Allow me to offer up a few "tid-bits" that may surprise you.

Be it YOU/ME or Richard Anderson, Recognition for "A job well done" should always be forthcoming.

I liked Anderson when he was with BIG RED.(Look at the piece of DOG CA-CA that NW has now)

I Love NW, second only to my former employer AA(My son works for you guys, with a tad better seniority than you have)

NW is a SURVIVOR carrier, And I'm not worried in the least about their future well-being !!!!

A Big part of why I say that Is a Long time Minnesota Congressman(D-James Oberstar), who is the chairman of the House Aviation sub-committee. He IS a royal pain in the ass,..BUT THAT works well for you guys. Oberstar can make MOUNTAINS out of MOLE Hills, and since Andersen needs to report back to DL/BOD's in a mere few weeks, means(IMHO) that he'll be reporting a deal with UAL,........due in large part to the NW unions, AND Oberstar.~~~~~~~~~~~~~Steenland BE DAM*ED !!!!

FWAAA is definitely correct, in that this Industry NEEDS to make this "shuffle"....."ONE last and final time" !!!!!

And as you say(and KNOW so well), YES, good luck to everyone active in this Industry(and Even to the old retired FARTS)

ps,

May I give you a "food for thought question" ??(that you can "take down off the shelf from time-to-time when your bored, or have to much time on your hands)

Ask yourself why AA, especially as we are now into 2008, has not mentioned a "peep" about purchasing the 787, let alone (god forbid) even having an order placed with Boeing ?? 😛h34r: 😛h34r:

A few reasons, There are many things happening at AMR, that could hinder many things, as you will see over the next year... There are many other airlines that don't have orders for the 787 as well.. UAL DAL AMR US all do not have 787 orders...

Yes beauty, It's true that AA "hasn't ordered" any 787's

With EVERYONE(Boeing, every airline exec, industry analysts, HEL* the whole free world), in agreement that the 787 is the greatest thing to come along since "sliced bread", and in a way you could NEVER understand about AA(meaning a non AA employee), it's VERY unnatural for AA "TO LOOK" liked they've been Upstaged...as far as the 787 is concerned !!

IMHO, NO other legacy plans for the long term like AA. So as far as the 787 situation, "what you SEE, may not be, WHAT you get"

Stay tuned !

Not quite everybody. In a inhouse call in show this month Anderson was asked about future fleet plans. He said he wasn't crazy about the 787 and to not expect any orders for them. He did say they were looking at firming up more 777 orders this spring. He expects to have 25-30 on property within five years.

The talking that is.

This began back when Anderson left NW. The fact that Comair was for sale, NW and DL filed for bankruptcy at the same time, and Pinnical is already flying for both may have been pretty big flags for all.

To add a little to your comment 88, DAL also has plenty of 67's that will not need replacing for some time. When they do the 87 will more than likely be what DL orders. To DL benefit the "bugs' will be worked out of the A/C by then. Not being the launch customer for a new A/C can have its advantages.
