America West's first pilot leaves US Airways
Randy McNerlin, one of the most-senior pilots at US Airways, flew his last flight for the carrier last week. The Arizona Republic writes that "McNerlin, the pilot who many consider to be America West's first, retired Friday the day before his 60th birthday. Federal law restricts pilots age 60 and older from flying commercially." The Republic notes that the reverse side of McNerlin's employee badge reads "P0001," the low number a testimony to his longevity at the company. The Republic says "pilot numbers at US Airways, which merged with America West in 2005, now extend to more than 3,000. But for 24 years and three weeks, McNerlin held onto the most senior number."
McNerlin tells the Republic that he's flown more than 20,500 hours during his 24-year career at America West and US Airways. The paper says that during Operation Desert Storm, McNerlin flew U.S. troops into Kuwait on an America West Boeing 747. On that flight, McNerlin says he could not resist calling America West's president at the time, saying: "Remember when you said we'd never go east of the Mississippi River? Well, we just crossed the Nile." The Republic says McNerlin plans to work for an Indian carrier before retiring for good.
