What's new

(big Red) A-330's

NH/BB--

Current routes are:

DTW to CDG, AMS, FRA. LGW comes soon, I believe. Not sure how many we currently have (and without access to the fleet list here at home), but I think 4? 5? I will check when I go in tonight. The intent is to replace the remaining DC-10's plying those routes. We will also soon be getting the -ER version, which will be used across the other pond on routes from the west coast. SFO-NRT is first, followed by PDX-NRT later this year. Hope this helps.

P.S. Congrats on retiring!

Another NW A330 question: are there personal video screens in coach?
If so, which system does NW use?

After looking up the fleet list/delivery sched. last night, here's some more info....

We currently have 7 A330's in the fleet, with one more scheduled to be delivered in May, then no more until May of '05. The first -200(ER) comes on line in July, followed by one in August, and then 2 in Sept. , 2 in Oct., and 1 in Nov. After that no more -200 deliveries until feb. '07 (unless they convert options, etc.). Hope this helps (hey, who says working graveyard at a line station can't be productive? ).

Thanx, Kev.

The 330 is (IMHO) an EXELLENT a/c for you guys.

Now that I've "exorcised" AA out of my life(THANK GOD), I can concentrate on my "new" favorite airline, NW(BIG RED) !!!!!

Thankfully, my oldest son has 17 years(ese) with you guys.

SEA/LAX/SFO already have nonstops to NRT. LAX & SEA currently run the route with 747's, and SFO is a DC-10. PDX will be a new service starting in June. It will begin with a DC-10, and switch to an A330 when more come on line (Black Dog is correct, by the way; FCO first then LGW over the Atlantic, and SFO, then PDX over the Pacific (using the -ER version).

Kev,
Thanx.

Another question(or 2/3)

Is pinnacle the only operator flying r/j's, and saab 340's, for NW ??

Are there any OTHER small a/c/ or companys flying under the NW name ??

EXCLUDING CODE SHARING !!!!!!!!!!(CO/DL)

Thanx,

Pinnacle flies the CRJ for NW. Mesaba flies the Avro RJ85 (ARJ) and the saab 340.
By the way, NW owns these jets, and leases them back to Pinnacle & Mesaba.

There aren't any other "small" a/c operators that fall into the same category that I can think of.

Pacific Island aviation runs some Shorts 360s out of Guam and Saipan with our flight numbers, but that's a code share.....

Kev,
So(in a sense), pinnacle and mesaba are (almost) like AE is to AA.(which IMHO is perhaps AA's greatest weapon(AE).

Leasing the A/c to pinnacle/mesaba, reminds me (somewhat) of when Bob Crandall "broke up" SABRE, and sold pieces to other companys(US), but still retained controlling intrest, or some kind of "loooong term" sweetheart deal for AA.

I heard a rumor, something about pinnacle stock, in conjunction with NW pensions ?

Speaking of pensions, now that Anderson, and every other airline CEO, got Big $$$$ pension relief, (IMO) I predict he(Anderson) will now have a tough time getting any concessions(Hourly rate of pay), from the NW (IAM)ese's.

If my fact's are right, AFTER we(AA) took concessions, we were still making more per hour than a topped out NW ESE, PLUS AA is giving the TWU/FSC's back 1.5%, starting 5/1.

Comparing AA/AE to NW & Mesaba/Pinnacle is a good analogy, though both of these are still separate companies (no flow through, etc.).

NW used the IPO of Pinnacle stock to (in part) fund our pension plan. Hopefully, you're right, and with the new relief, the IAM and the membership will hold strong.

As far as pay rates go, a topped out ESE (5 year scale) currently makes $20.20/hr. base rate, not sure how that now correlates to AA . I thought they made a bit less, but will again make more next year?

I'm glad to see NW finally getting new Atlantic aircraft. A330-200 don't make good Pacific airplanes. The only two engine airplane for the Pacific is the 777. A340's ( A330's twin) is the Pacific airplane from Airbus until the A380 arrives in 2006. The A330 ER doesn't exist under any Airbus designation, the A330-200 is the longer range of the two A330's with about 6000 miles range. The larger A330-300 has a range of about 4000 miles, about 8.5 hours worth. NW will have both but needs dozens to replace all those DC-10's. NW should invest in some A340 & only get -200 to better serve Europe.

A330-200 is Airbus's answer to the 767-300ER so many use across the pond, Airbus's earlier atempt the A310-300 could only fly 5000 miles against the 767ER's 6000, the difference between the west coast and Europe. A330-200 has killed off the 767ER with airlines like SwissAir, Air France, Tam & BMI ordering it. The A330-300 has a good following in the Asia-Pacific with Cathay using it to Australia and Qantas getting some for trips north to Hong Kong. The east coast of the USA sees lots of A330-300 with Aer Lingus, SAS & Lufthansa. Aer Lingus though traditionally served only JFK & BOS but when they wanted to go to LAX they had a distance problem, they had to order the -200 for its greater range. -300 are great if you fly short 2 or 3 hours segments but most airlines needing distance need the -200. Then there Cathay's solution, put First Class into the -300 to go to Australia.
