there are clearly some very wealthy people in NYC who don't fly commercial but it is alot smaller number of people than you think. A stroll through LGA on any given weekday will allow you to bump into alot of well-known people who don't fly to every event in a corporate jet.

Since most of the financing for large aircraft deals is guaranteed by the manufacturer who plays a major role in getting the financing for the deal done, the real question is what manufacturing personnel ride on commercial flights. Top execs certainly don't but you don't have to move too far down the org structure to find those that do - and they do show their preference for flying on their customers' flights.

Although deals the size of AA and DL's are huge, financing is split up between many, many banks and the money is made on volume - the size of the deal - far more than the interest rate.
Remember though that it has been alleged that Airbus provided below market interest rates to AA in order to win the deal; we have no idea if that is true or if Boeing was willing to do the same for the orders it won from AA or DL.

While the focus is on the AA and DL order, UA/CO and WN will both likely place major narrowbody orders in the not too distant future.
