Hello. This is Bruce Lakefield on Friday, September 23rd. As you know, our merger with America West Airlines is scheduled to close on Tuesday. So, in all likelihood, this will be my last message to you as president and CEO.

No words can describe how I have come to appreciate all of you. Not just for your outstanding character and high level of professionalism, but also for your love of this industry and your dedication to our company. You have made enormous sacrifices to keep our company alive and preserve our proud heritage.

I understand how hard those sacrifices have been for you. You were asked to do more with less --more than you thought you could do. And you delivered.

Believe me, asking people to make sacrifice after sacrifice is not in any way enjoyable. My sole motivation when I accepted the CEO responsibilities was to keep this company in business and to save as many jobs as we possibly could.

I wish that industry conditions were favorable enough that we could pay you more and provide you with additional resources to do your job. But the harsh reality is that industry conditions are worse than ever before. There were times when we felt that we would not be able to stay in business for more than a few weeks.

But we did. And what we have now is far more than we could have hoped for. We are merging with a young company with a fresh approach to running an airline and a record of proven success. I have said to you time and again that I have utmost confidence in our new management team, particularly our new chief executive, Doug Parker.

And I have tremendous confidence in you, that your pride and professionalism will make the new US Airways a success. Yes, your pride and professionalism will make the new US Airways a success. Many times, as I have flown our system, I have seen you in action. You are courteous, helpful, and professional. I continue to hear the same thing from our customers.

Our operational performance for September has been great, at both mainline and Express. There's a good chance that, for the first time, we will be paying incentives under our All Together, On Time initiative. This is one expense we will be overjoyed to pay. It speaks highly of every one of you to be able to focus on our performance, given the many challenges we face.

While I will be handing off my responsibilities to Doug, I will not be far from the action. I will remain as vice-chairman of the new board of directors. I look forward to that.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to have worked together to enable this airline to continue flying. We have celebrated our accomplishments and suffered through our disappointments. Yet, still we fly high above the rest. Working with you is an experience that I never will forget. So my final Bravo Zulu goes out to every one of you who have made this airline what it is today. There are no finer employees and no prouder a former CEO.

Thank you.

Yup, him walking out of here with a cool $1.7 mils compensation package for 2 years senioirity is a nice added bonus retirment for the guy.

If I were a flyonthewall, I bet his standard of living when up quite a bit during his tenure, and during our worst time for the airline. Heck, I'd want the airline to keep going just to bring in a $35,000 a month.

Bravo zulu and adios, amigo!! And you welcome.

Lets see what did Wolf, not Wolfe do.

Largest Aircraft order in US history, A330 ordered, expanded US and grew it, increased international presence and carribean.

Lakefield, massive paycuts and layoffs and bankruptcy.

What about the stock buyback...how many millions did Wolf waste? He was brought in to polish a turd and he could not even do that correctly, but does he really care? He laughed all the way to the bank!

$1.5 billion.

You can't shrink an airline into profitability, US is the case study for that.

Wolf accomplished what he did when Oil was at $11 per barrell and under no pressure during a bankruptcy. Lakefield steered us thorough a second bankruptcy post 911 and when Oil was at darn near $70 per barrell. It is not easy to marry off your daughter when she is barefoot and pregnant (merger with AWA). Lakefield did a good job.

Dave got 7 million thank yous when he got fired.

Lakefield did an amazing job with what little he had to work with. Essentially, he was handed s*** it a pretty box and told to clean it up. Were some of the choice he made popular, heck no. However, I truly think that if it weren't for him, US definately wouldn't be here. ...

And I remember at the temporary relief hearing, he said he could not take a paycut and he earns more then Kelliher at WN and Neeleman at B6 and they make money and US ended up in bankruptcy again.

All the man did was write a letter saying how proud he is of everyone and that he was sorry about all the pay cuts...

Why can't you just take it for what it is? I for one think he did the best he could have done under the circumstances.

Lets all just look ahead now.... All of us at US should be glad we have jobs...

Why did he not take a paycut?

He is not better then the rank and file and like I said, he earned more then Kelliher and Neeleman and they made profits while US lost money and stole from the employees.

We're still here- Mr. Lakefield earned it!
I don't believe anybody else would have given us a chance.
He restructured when there was nothing left to restructure.
He never told us anything that wasn't the truth.

Bravo Zulu to Bruce Lakefield and thanks.

Yes, thankyou mr. Lakefield! I am sure glad that you were able to sell off the 170 division, and put another 1000 families out of work. I would be offended by this but I know you and the other senior management needed the retention bonuses. What would we all do if these fine moral people in CCY were not given bonuses to do the job they are already paid to do? Yes, mr Lakefield thank you for allowing us to pay with concession after concession. I am so glad that we all give management all the credit for saving the company, you and all you compatriots in DC have gone above and beyond. You yourself Mr. Lakefield have sacrificed by only going with two homes. I only have to live just above the poverty level and live week to week to make this possible.

Thank you sir may I have another!
