" There are two ways to conquer and Enslave a Nation."

One is by the Sword,......the Other by Debt.

AND,

Keep Wages from rising (NO significant increases nation wide for over 15+ Years. OUTSOURCE Jobs to other countries with very cheap wages.)

DEFINITELY keep UNIONS from forming which results in workers making higher wages. (THAT would result in Lower profits, for the corperations who are making astronomical Profits)

I have no love for unions. Worked with them for 10 years while at American and they are as useful as tits on a bull as far as I am concerned. They have turned unskilled jobs into careers. There is no reason a FA or auto assembly line worker should be making the kind of money that they are making. I know I was/am getting screwed over by the company. No reason I need to pay the union dues to screw me over as well.

We do not live in the 1700's where child labor laws and safety are issues. I do believe that for the most part the market should dictate what salaries should be. I don't see a problem with having state/fed regulations on minimums for certain services but to allow a union to hold a company for ransom just because they want a larger pay check. I know if I were a business owner I would be a bit ticked off. I know that if I owned a business I want to be able to dictate who works for me and who does not. I decide who gets paid what, not you.

What are astronimical profits? Everyone b1tches about the oil compaines but when I looked at the numbers they were making about 10% on the investment. That does not seem out of line. My beef is not with their profit but that they are gettign a free ride with defending their investments from the US military.

And the BANKS..'Tree ?
What about them ?

Something is seriously Wrong...when wages have been stagnant for nigh on 15-20 years in this country, while corperations keep breaking thier previous year profits.

You (personally) won't get a Gigantic argument out of me about Unions, but you've gotta' admit 'Tree that they're largely responsible for the Middle Class.

(Just to name a few professions/jobs);
A guy 'hanging steel' 100 floors up, or a RN in an OR or ER or ICU, a gal in the cab of a locomotive pulling 125 hazmat cars down the side of the Rocky Mountains, or a Fireman in downtown Chicago or a Tug Boat crew fighting High winds and a tide running against them, while they fight hard to dock a MASSIVE tanker safely to its berth..............can Never be Overpaid !

BUT,

If they had THIER way,...those hospitals, companys, Cities or Rail Roads would see to it that they were Underpaid !

Not sure where the banks play into the union/wage arguments.

The unions were (as in a long time ago) responsible for the middle class. They lost their way. They are no longer an advocate for employee safety and equality. They are now a corporate business as bad as the ones they claim to fight against.

The professions you listed are skilled labor at least as how I define it but yes they too can be over paid.

I agree that corporations are as self centered as Unions/labor is. The job of corporate execs is to get as much profit out of the company as possible. The job of labor is to get as much money for as little work as possible. The problem with this equation is no one is concerned about the best interest of the company as a whole. Business is not interested in a fair wage and neither is labor. Each only wants to screw the other.

I do not know what the answer is. The current system certainly does not work any more.

Just look at the airline industry and how the non-union workers fared much worse than the unionized workers.

Ever wonder why the airlines have on of the highest percentages of unionization?

Its because the companies screw the employees.

The reason you have labor laws is because of unions.

People died in order to have the right to unionize.

I was non-union for nearly 20 years. Never had any issues.

The question is not what unions did but what are they doing. One look at the arguments going on in the airline forums would seem to indicate that other than p1ssing off the membership not much.

And what percentage do you speak of?

So what's stopping you from unionizing ?

I grew up in family where both parents sat on the other side of the table from unions. My father sat on various boards of directors for over 30 years. I see that a union is necessary in an industry such as the airlines. I see both sides. When a "union" is formed to hammer it's membership, it's not going to survive. Case in point, the US Airline Pilots Association. It's going to be tossed in the ash heap of history. Something about a house divided will not stand comes to mind.
