Dl started this route shortly after US proposed merger and from day one it had great loads on 738 It even operated as a 752 for a period of time. yet despite great loads DL chopped the route. Why did this happen and is their any chance of seeing this route come back.

Probably not, they only started the route to be spiteful. The loads might of been great but that doesn't matter when your yields are in the toilet.

I doubt that the yields were any worse than RDU-SLC which still operates on a summer sked. At least there are more options like MEM, DTW, MSP in order to avoid transiting ATL. RDU has had better DL service than CLT due to the US Hub at CLT. I was surprised when DL started this route and more surprised at the loads.....truly an indication that people in CLT wanted an alternative to US.

If that were true then the route would be operating and um..... Well it's not. If the route did make any money, then it should still be flying. I'm also sorry to say but I doubt people were flocking to DL because they started CLT-SLC. Aside from the hand full of planes with PTV's the service is the same.....

Why did this happen . . .
Like all such decisions, it happened because the airline decided it could more efficiently use the resources supporting that route / flight somewhere else.

. . . and is their any chance of seeing this route come back.
Sure.

It will come back if and when Delta decides that is a more efficient use of its resources than are other routes.

I don't think it's as much people looking for a US alternative, but more so, Delta flights just do well in general here in CLT. I have traveled on the CLT-ATL flights numerous times, sometimes connecting to a destination I could get to on US non-stop and other times where I couldn't. The loads on those DL flights to/from ATL are usually really healthy.

Flights like CLT-SLC that over several hubs are the ones that are most likely to be discontinued in a downturn. It just makes sense in down times to push the traffic over existing hubs. Even in a great economy, longhaul routes to the west are not going to be the strongest performers on an airline's network.
