Word floating around is that the City has ordered or is about to order 20+ deicing trucks and has hired a firm to handle deicing of US mainline and express aircraft. The city is upfitting an old cargo building for maintenance of the trucks...Someone overheard an airport department manager also saying that they would like to handle ramp functions down the road....

I loved the smell of glycol in the morning. Ah those were the days. Easy money and kinda fun. But like everything else, us mechanical mutts mostly gave it away. Been gone for several years now for most stations. Remember when-----I think I'm gonna cry now. BUH BYE

Don't worry the IAM will be right on top of it............."they can do that"

Not Covered in Scope. The Company GAVE AWAY Deicing at numerous out stations a few years ago, they claimed it was cheaper. And YES I could see CLT Airport starting a ground handling service, Airlines with only a few flights a day into a station are AWLAYS shopping around for the cheapest services. Heck, Piedmont Handles Ground Services at how many stations they dont even fly into?

Skinvalve, it wasnt given away buy mtc, the company took it in bankruptcy.

Ah yes, Remember when----- A 4 hour post shift OT call, run home and sleep for 2 or 3 hours, then a return OT call to de-ice for 8 more hours all at DOUBLE TIME. Your feet were frozen but your wallet was full.

Done here in PIT by Integrated De-Icing Service. All part time, no benefits and $9 per hour.

Rumor is, say good bye to de-ice in CLT.

Already long gone in PIT & PHL being done by vendors. I guess that CLT has been fortunate to hang on to it until now. As far as the Airport taking over the ramp, I wouldn't be too concerned about that in a station the size of CLT. Those in a small to medium size station are always concerned about who may be out there waiting to take their jobs away for $9 an hour.

Sad part is, even Piedmont is facing tough competition from a variety of vendors for station ops work. They recent lost a bid to handle Air Tran in LGA to one of 13 other companies that were competing for the contract. At my station (and probably others), the person deicing your plane could literally be making less per hour than the person who handed you your McCafe in the terminal. It makes you weep to think of what has happened to an industry that used to give employees a sense of pride and security to be working there.

I do sometimes wonder about the vendors, can recall when the pads first opened and all the FAA oversight....checking the proper mixture, holdover times, critical areas, ect. All had to be documented with your A&P #!! Now who cares I guess? Is drug testing even a requirement for these part time wonders?? We used to have to go through winterization before even stepping foot on the pad, now what point and shoot??

Check out ADP at Paris CDG. Might be the size of CLT.

I’m not sure if it gets cold enough here in CLT to actually lose deicing... we really don’t do it that much!

Without looking at the MTC CBA... I'm relatively sure it is protected, but Fleet Service has language in their CBA that allows them to do it as well. Maybe Charlie Brown or Redeye can clarify that.

As far as mainline Fleet Service being outsourced... I’m callin’ BS! Fleet is protected contractually for this work even after abrogation. I’m pretty damn sure the ND boys ain’t plannin’ on giving up the entire scope of the Membership of Fleet Service in contract talks!

Where did this crap come from... a bathroom stall partition?

I believe some airports in Europe require use of their ramp vendors.

But, that is Europe and the vendors are likely union.

I doubt that the MTC CBA has any language that protects deicing given that they lost it to a vendor in PHL & PIT. I would imagine that some of these airports have hand in the deicing operation due to the location of the pads, and coverage of all the airlines.
