Not the smartest thing to do if you ask me. Going to work for an airline that's not only BK but has terrible labor/management relations.
Pay is good and they have kids to feed. They even became SCABS for better pay than AA offers. Imagine, the BK Carrier with a busted union and imposed Labor Agreement pays better than AA and the Jim Little negotiated concessions. That says alot about TWU right there.
They have likely lived much better than had they stayed at AA. Who knows long term maybe you are right, but with kids, they were not looking at the long term, they were looking at food on the table, and at least being recognized for the license they worked so hard to earn. Most of these mechanics could go to a non-union MRO and make more than AA is paying them. And some are doing that too.
For some, possessing the A&P license that cost them thousands of dollars and years to obtain, then not having that compensated or recongnized is the worse concession of all. AA/TWU will not even let these skilled mechanics bid on mechanic jobs, that have relegated to them second class and called them OSM's. (Overhaul Support Mechanics)
This removes their ability to bid jobs.
Currently there are unwanted A&P jobs on the Tulsa Base, in particular the infamous "PULSE LINE", the brain child of Burchette and Romano. Nobody wants to work the Pulse Line, most that have been assigned there bid off as soon as possible. Now these unpaid license mechanics would volunteer to work the Pulse and get their $5.00 per hour back, but instead they are forced to stay within the OSM classification, and AA Management Teams with the TWU continues the an unbelievable cycle and assigns more mechanics to these lines, only to have them bid off as soon as possible. It is the damndest thing I have seen, Force Them On - They Bid Off, Force More On - They Bid Off, on and on and on, all the while, there are willing skilled workers to do the job.
Sometimes, success on Wall Street and avoidance of BK does not equate to success for the individual.
