What's new

Cripes, the stock is off the chain today? What gives?

The Deutsch Bank airline conference is going on right now.... UAL has just released info saying they will pull domestic capacity w/ overall capacity flat.
Airline shares are up across the board; as of now LCC leads the pack up by 18%, followed by DAL at 9% or so....UAL a bit below DAL - as of right now.

USAirways also said the global financial problems (esp. in Europe) do not appear to be weakening demand.

Time to buy!

US will probably rise in 2Q12 after the usual fall and holiday fiascos!

Here are weekly stock changes in the airline industry:

ALK up 11.7%

AMR up 8.2%

DAL up 17.4%

JBLU up 13.1%

LCC up 19.4%

LUV up 11.8%

UAL up 15.1%

The network carrier segment outperformed the low fare carrier segment.... driven by the positive news the network carriers were able to deliver at the Deutsch Bank airline conference.
.
Although they have moved back and forth over the past couple years, according to the WSJ, DAL is now the highest valued US airline at $7.2B with UAL a few percent behind LUV which is itself a few percent behind DL. LCC is worth just under $1B.
.
Wall Street is quite optimistic at the prospects of the US network carriers.

Apparently the WSJ's proofreader needs new glasses. The numbers are right but reversed for DL and WN according to several sources. Sorry, WT, but WN is still worth more than DL.

Also, I happened to notice profit margin for the latest quarter (annualized). WN falls squarely between UA (the highest of the three) and DL (the lowest of the three). Didn't you say that the network carriers had higher profit margins than WN?

And RJET -- Republic Airlines (parent company of Frontier) is up only a measly 5.6%, trailing even bankrupt bound AMR... I am still smelling a merger (or sale of Frontier) with someone especially at this price. The whole company has a market cap of only $144 million, but who wants to try to catch a falling knife?

So Speculates Jester.

Despite protestations to the contrary I still think US Airways should pick up RJET should they go tits up. With a market cap of under $150 mil US could just write a friggin' check and pick up a lot of good business once the closed the DEN hub. MKE gives them a hub mid country as well. Not to mention a hige chunk of the fleet is already in US livery.

I was always told not to believe a rumor until it was officially denied. Well Doug has denied an interest in RJET numerous times so perhaps things are going one behind the magic curtain.

So opines sparrowhawk
