Just curious what the current number of pilots on furlough at AA is? Thanks.....

Any AA pilot recall talks?

I believe that UAL, DAL, NWA & US are all recalling pilots.

AA seems to be grounding airplanes at a prodigious rate; dunno if the groundings are keeping up with retirements/resignations, but conspiracy theorists might claim the two are related (AA grounding enough airplanes to avoid recalls).

AA has grounded an additional 30 MD-80s since last December, announced that 27 others grounded three years ago have been permanantly retired and has announced that 19 x-TWA 757s will be returned to their lessors later this year thru next year.

Another big difference at AA is that early pilot retirements have not been all that numerous - unlike at DL where lots of pilots retired early prior to last summer so they could get half their pension in a lump sum. AA's pilot pension has the same feature but AA's relative financial health has kept pilots from retiring early in vast numbers (unlike at DL and other airlines). Fewer early retirements and airplane groundings may help AA avoid recalls for the short term. Long term, AA will have to recall (or continue to shrink dramatically).

Personally, I always thought AA's MD80 fleet was too damn big for its own good...

Retirements are only projected at about 200 for Y2007, and 400 in Y2008, so there might be some recalls at some point, but the list won't be cleared for five or six years unless there are new aircraft ordered beyond those being retired.
