The next time you fly in or out of Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), things may look a little different. But don't worry. You're in the right place.

Beginning November 15, we're moving our ticketing counters from E Concourse to A-East Concourse, and our flights will arrive and depart from gates A10, A12 and A13.

Additionally, we're relocating our Crown Room Club® inside security and adjacent to our new departure gates. So you may kick back after you've hit the security lines, and plug in or just unwind in our new Club.

As far as I've heard - and what the press is reporting - it is a done deal. Seems like it makes sense from an airport utilization perspective. Let's see - 3 gates for delta with probably 5 or 6 flights a day from each gate - other gates in terminal E for SouthWest with probably the same number or more flights - versus US using the gates for 1 or 2 international flights a day. Hmmmmmmmmmmm

Will Parker be there for the ribbon cutting ceremony?

2 of those cities (out of 4) that DL serves from PHL:

JFK is operated with a 50 seat EMB145 or CRJ100 3x daily (150 seats)
CVG is operated with a mix of 50-70 seat CRJ100/700/900s 5x daily (330 seats)

Now, there's no way those 8 flights can utilize a single gate. Probably 4 or 5, at the most. That takes the total seats served down to around 400 seats served on RJs. At a gate designed with intl. pax in mind. Go figure.

Meanwhile, a two widebodies with 250+ people each generating more tax revenue for the city could utilize a single gate with the right scheduling. Even a domestic mainline jet could use it early in the day while a widebody comes in later for the intl. turn.

What happens when DL someday decides to pare down ATL with more RJs (already one operates among the 757s going there)? What a waste of gate space.

DL will actually be utilizing its gates at PHL pretty well.

ATL 10x (9x757, 1xCR7)
JFK 3x (all CRJ/ERJ)
SLC 2x (1x757, 1x738)
CVG 6x (2xCR9, 2xCR7, 2xCR2)
BOS 4x (all CRJ)

That's 25 daily flights with 2,802 daily departing seats which works out to be 934 departing seats/gate. That's better utilization than US gets at PHL.

Look, I'm sure DL will utilize them just fine. But the CITY is not utilizing them for what they are designed for. Esp. for RJs!

This is horrendous mismanagement, which wouldn't be the first time for PHL airport management. This may even lower DL's operational performance if they've been used to taxing the RJ's in and out of runway 17-35. Now that those aircraft will have to weave through all the other ground traffic, and probably be relegated to 9-27 more often.

But the mismanagement is also on US's part. If they utilized their domestic gates in a half-way decent manner, they could easily provide three more gates on B/C to DL and therefore keep A-East open. And I can't totally blame PHL for not trying to help US much, given the way US has screwed over other facilities that bowed to their beckon call (PIT), it's no surprise that PHL doesn't trust US management.

Actually, it sounds more and more like SWA played off the greed and ignorance of the City of Philadelphia to bully their way into throwing up road blocks in front of US's expansion plans in PHL. After seeing where the new SWA routes will be in Spring 2008, they are hardly utilizing the old Delta gates. Delta on the other hand, was trapped in the middle and came out smelling like a rose!

That is because of some of WN's gates at the end of E are going to be shut down while PHL builds a hammerhead at the end of the terminal. After that is complete, WN can expand.

As if there weren't enough problems with congestion in Philly.
