A somewhat tough choice. Seeing as how Delta is trying to outsource EVERYTHING, including 100% of their International FA's, I'd say US Airways is a safer choice.

Oh wait, that's NWA. Don't know then.

There are alot of varibles to look into ......
Where do u want to live?

What are the medical/dental?

Is it part time or full time?

And always remember it is the airlines you will probrably work for a few if its your career choice.

and lastly the people at either are not refective of the mgmt.

Both have great people, Both are good airlines with a troubled past and all airlines futures will be uncertain at somepoint even the all mighty swa, jb.

With all due respect, why are considering an airline career? What kind of education do you have and what other industries have you considered? Pass benefits are the only allure and there are plenty of people here who will tell you they aren't what they used to be.

An airline job can be fun if you want to see the world quickly and be around aviation but there are other much economically safer places to make money and settle down.

it would be purely for fun and to travel. i'm in my early 20s now and just wanna explore before i settle down

As opposed to WT who isn't even in the industry but likes to 'illuminate' us with all his knowledge.

Caligurl.....WT is right. DO NOT start an airline career! You will only get a lifetime of pain and disappointment....trust me....I have been there. My Dad spent 36 years in management at Braniff, only to see it go down in flames. I spent 38 years at United, forced to move 6 times, laid-off 8 times, away from friends and family on all holidays, forced to work graveyard and night shifts for 26 years, etc, etc. I could go on and on. Also, the passes aren't worth a damn....a good rule of thumb is when an airline has a load factor over 75%, you might just as well stay home rather than try to get on an airplane. Look at the load factors of any airline today -( except SWA) they are all in the 80%'s and sometimes even higher. The only time that you might have a chance to get on a plane is if you are at a major hub for the first bank of departures in the early morning.....otherwise, fuggitaboutit. If you have the desire to use your customer service and public contact skills, get into the Medical field. Go to work for a hospital or nursing facility. The pay and benefits are comparable to airline work and it will be a much better job.....believe me, I was there!

I've been a flight attendant for Delta for 16 years. I started when I was 20 because I wanted to travel (and I speak French.)

Pass benefits are NOT all they are cracked up to be. First of all, you don't make enough money to go anywhere. Even if you fly for free you're still poor for hotels and meals.

Second, since it's almost impossible to non-rev anywhere, you end up stressing over getting bumped off of flights for days at a time - putting that job in jeopardy since you can't make it back to work. So you end up buying a full fare ticket just to get home. (Worst case scenario - but VERY real.)

My husband and I travel quite a bit - but we haven't used my passes in SEVERAL YEARS. Since I'm a FA, I am allowed to ride the jumpseat, which is the only way I get anywhere anymore. Of course my husband can't do that - so I only "non-rev" - which for me is really riding the jumpseat - when I am traveling alone. If its with hubby, we buy tickets. Since i live in PHL, it's usually not even on DL, but on SWA or USAir.

Want to go visit the family for the holidays? FORGET trying to use your passes. Want to take your dream trip to Hawaii? Get in line with the 90 other non-revs senior to you standing by on your flight. Thinking of going to europe? If you get bumped chances are you're out of luck until the next day. That hotel you reserved is expensive when you're not even staying in it.

For the most part, flying is so cheap now it's not worth the hassle of standing by, or the lack of pay and benefits for the paltry pass benefits.

I can't stress to folks enough - do NOT get into the airline industry. The pay sucks. The benefits suck. The pass benefits are a joke. The only people who should even consider a job with the airlines are those with no education to do anything else.

Don't listen to all the naysayers that work at the pathetic "legacy" carriers. They're just bitter because the LCC's are kicking behind all over the U.S.

If you come to work at Southwest, I guarantee that you will never want to work at another company. The pay is great, the bennies are super, and everyone that works here is a WN'r (winner)!!!!

I don't work for delta or us but i do fly a tremendous amount both domestic and international, usually on ual or aa. i have been forced to purchase an occasional ticket on the low budget carriers. it has never been a good experience, on southwest or spirit anyway. i would take a "legacy-quality carrier" any day. sorry to go against the political tide but wn means "weiner" to me and i try hard not to let my family fly on them or a couple of other carriers that i don't think are safe or professional. flame away!

It's not "weiner", it's "winner" (like WNr)....get it?

Lets just hope they aren't the Mom or Dad! Some people should not be allowed to reproduce! LOL

No, they're just bitter that their jobs are in jeopardy, mainly because Southwest was able to turn the air travel industry into the automobile equivalent of a Yugo.

Cheap/low quality, no frills, obnoxious flight crews.... forget that, when the legacies are gone, I'm going for Greyhound.

Caligurl - Personally, I'd go for DL. But they're both quality airlines.

Yes, Southwest is a great company. They treat their employees well and show their appreciation for hard work and dedication. (at least once their contracts are finally agreed upon - in the case of FAs.) In addition to being able to travel for free to such exotic places as Albuquerque and Midland/Odessa, you also are provided all the kool-aid you can drink.
