I liked the statement that Delta is the first major airline to announce capacity cuts for 2009. Particularly in light of the quote on MarketWatch.com from our (AA) CFO Tom Horton over a month ago that AA would cut domestic capacity 14% in 2009, I think Delta would be at least #2 to announce cuts.

Just heard on the News that Delta is planning another layoff.Have you heard anything.

I heard on Business Nightly Report that there will be layoffs associated with the cut back in capacity-no numbers, areas to reduce or dates. Sorry folks.

Delta, which closed its acquisition of Northwest Airlines (nyse: NWA - news - people ) in October, resulting in the world's largest air carrier as measured by traffic, said it was analyzing how the capacity reductions would affect staffing. In March, the company announced 2,000 job cuts and said it would offer voluntary severance packages. It said it would again offer such packages to meet staffing needs. Prior to the merger, Northwest trimmed its staff by 2,500 workers.

The early out packages have worked well in the past. I know of a bunch of guys that will jump at it this time around.

Really?? In this economy? With 401ks in the tank and other investments down?? With the unemployment rate up (in case they want to work part-time)?

All I can say is good for them that they can still afford to take an early-out.

A good part of the guys I work with have side businesses. So getting paid to not work at Delta would work for them just fine.
