Can anyone tell me about the history of DL @ PIT? I know today we see a binch of MD88's to CVG and ATL, some RJs to CVG and JFK. Did they ever serve more destinations? Any aircraft other than the MD's and RJs? Did they go head to head with EAL in the 70-90's for the ATL market? 🙂

I used to fly them to YYZ back in the '93-'94 timeframe on a 757 from PIT. The flights used to go ATL-PIT-YYZ and the same on the return. DL pulled out PIT-YYZ around the time US started service there. I don't remember which one happened first though.

Back in the late 80s to late 90s, U used to run anywhere from 5 to 7 round trips a day PIT ATL. DL always, and still seems to have, 4 to 5 round trips a day. Quite a few airlines have tried and failed in the market. The drop by DL of Toronto Pit Atl was a strange one...it always seemed to be full. Just the observation of a 17 year commuter on the route. As of now, you CANNOT go PIT ATL on any U jet or prop. Oh well, Atl is such a weak business market...why would any airline go after it??! Remember the good old days. U used to own the entire North half of D in ATL, as well as a couple of gates on the the south side that belonged to orginal U. Just about all gone. Best. Greeter.

The DL ATL-PIT-YYZ routing was a route awarded to DL before the open skies agreement with Canada. US didn't have authority to fly PIT-YYZ, but they did have ERI-YYZ and tagged PIT onto the end of it. The majority of these authorities were granted before deregulation and therefore before the modern day hub and spoke system.

In Philly, Eastern had PHL-YYZ and PHL-YUL authority that Midway 1 bought when Eastern quit the PHL hub. US flew PHL-BOS-YUL and I think PHL-Upstate NY-YYZ. US only started PHL-YYZ and PHL-YUL non-stops after Midway 1 closed their PHL hub.

After open skies, carriers naturally shifted their Canada routes to their appropriate hubs from outstations.

From what I've heard, U still has the rights to most of those gates on D, just leasing them to DAL.....of course with DAL in bankruptcy, I imagine U is not getting paid for the usage of the gates.

I've commuted on those flights too....always full! Maybe some-one with some common sense will get those gates back before Airtran tries to snag them.

Row is correct. If there are past-due payments, those may be lost, but current obligations still have to be met or US could pull the gates.
