Dogfight over Tokyo--Haneda Landing Rights

JAL and ANA fighting over new landing slots at Haneda. ANA thinks they should get all 20 being awarded because government bailed out JAL with taxpayer money. These are the last to be awarded for years because no runway construction is even in the planning stages for Tokyo. (Somehow I don't think any will end up going to a U.S. airline.)

This will be very interesting to watch and the implications do extend far beyond Japan.


Also, the US will ensure that Japanese airlines cannot use these slots to add flights to the US unless US airlines have an equal opportunity. Given that US-Japan routes use a disproportionately large number of slots at Tokyo's airports, the chances are low that there will be any real movement in the US-Japan market while the Japanese try to shift HND traffic to markets where it makes the most economic sense and where they gain advantages on their own merits.
