Was told today that we are gonna start flying the 170's to Key West and orlando and Ft. Lauderdale in Nov. Ft. Lauderdale should be interesting....half the plane will need a wheel chair..lol. 😛
I wonder why we are starting new service if the a/c are gonna be sold. You think they would be cutting back. I hope Key West is the overnight. It actually is gonna be a through flight from KW to FLL to MCO..to DCA (so I have heard).

That run is currently done by PSA's crj. dca-fll-eyw. Not sure how the loads have been, but would imagine the 170 performs better than the 50 in eyw. With full pax and bags, it gets a little dicey into and out of there. Originally it was supposedly going to be a crj700, but didn't get all the airframe they were supposed to.

Ive done them and there all full dca-mco-fll-eyw usually over sold on all. the e170 should be good for that problem

can if needed, usair bring in a mainline jet if the problem persists with e170?

Sure, by pulling it from another route since we are losing planes, not gaining them. Given the loss of Boeings/Airbuses, you'll see more RJ's replacing mainline on routes than vice-versa (although specific routes could see the opposite).

that would make too much sense the new airline might as well be us airways express its starting to be more widely known

The current CRJ flying is full and weight restricted a lot of the time. It makes sense to put a larger, better performing aircraft on the route. The plane usually flies DCA-MCO-FLL-EYW-FLL-EYW-FLL-EYW-FLL-MCO-DCA.

Let me try to understand this. U is parking 60 737's and Airbuses and now the 170's are going to replace some of the CRJ flying.
Won't this mean that mainline flights will have to be cut soon ?
Any thoughts ???????

I understand that part but if you pull 170's from mainline stations to replace CRJ's there would be a reduction of mainline flying.

Only if its a former Piedmont FLA shuttle Fokker pilot. EYW runway is only 4800 feet with only VFR approaches. When its below minimums, our guys haveta circle till it clears up or stay on the ground in FLL. Water on one endof the runway, bunker and salt ponds on other. If you don't hit the piano keys at EYW, you and your passengers will go swimming, as Chandler (ASA) CRJ 700s have almost done. A lot of JS crews have also done go-arounds right before they flare in EYW... CRJs are *not* the plane of choice here in terms of operational performance. Also, decision speed for the CRJ on departure is "when you release the brakes" as one of our captains said! If you don't know FLA weather, the EYW runway, and are *very* comfortable with your airplane, then the FLL/EYW run is *NOT* for you. We've even had 1 crew return to FLL because the runway was wet & they were circling at 1500 feet (Navy approach loves us to burn gas at unreasonable altitudes)... the crew wouldn't even shoot an approach, with 5.5 on the gas... had a lil cell over Boca Chica and it "prevented" them from landing, even though ChittlePublic was landing their ERJ 135 from MCO & Gulfstream was also landing.

PSA does *very* well on the EYW run. No overnights due to exorbant EYW hotel costs.. doesn't make sense to pay $180 a night for a hotel room *per* flight crew member . Company hotels in EYW are Radisson, Fairfield Inn, Banana Bay (in that order).

Right now the E-jets are only bookable to 58 due to the short runway here.. once the MDA guys get used to the short runway & performance of the a/c I'd expect those authorizations to go up a bit.

Btw, the MCO-FLL flight is all latin connection traffic and some EYW traffic. I hope you know spanish.

Line is DCA-MCO-FLL-EYW-FLL (terminate) FLL-EYW-FLL-EYW-FLL-MCO-DCA

Gee, almost like a return of the ol Florida Shuttle, should bring a tear to some of the old PDT guys...

As for performance, the E-170 should have no problems, it will outperform the RJ's and uses a lot less runway than the larger narrowbodies.

Not to put down the PDT pilots or anything..but...The E-170 front end crews are damb good with short runways on this jet. They were doing short runways with the mainline fleet for years..this should be cake for them.

TOTO - This has been very obvious for quite some time - USAir has yet pulled one over on people yet again - MDA has been doing mainline flying since it has been running - They will replace your 737 or should I say pretty much have already started - The folks at MDA ARE MAINLINE however they are planning to sell us off to an express carrier - get used to it - we could turn into a mainly express carrier - who knows at this point.
