Shots fired on airliner
By Miami Herald staff
Shots were fired on board an American Airlines flight that is parked at Miami International Airport, possibly leaving one man dead, officials said. Police, SWAT teams and federal agents responded to the scene.
It couldn't immediately be confirmed if anyone was hurt or who fired the shots on American Airlines Flight 924. But Herald news partner WFOR-CBS4, citing anonymous federal sources, reported that a U.S. air Marshal shot and killed a man acting aggressively either within the airplane's cabin or on a jetway connecting the plane to the terminal.
Sources told WFOR that the incident didn't appear to have been terrorism related.
According to this report, the passenger had been ''acting aggressively'' on the plane and ''had words'' with two federal air Marshals on board. The man reportedly reached for his bag and said something about an explosive or bomb when he was shot.
In another unconfirmed report, Marshals pursued the man off the plane and up the jetway, where he was shot.
More than 100 passengers on the flight were being detained by federal authorities for questioning.
WFOR said the incident occurred on American Airlines Flight 924, which had arrived at MIA from Medellin, Colombia. The flight was due to depart for Orlando at 2:18 p.m. -- roughly the time the report of shots fired was received.
The aircraft, a Boeing 757, was parked at Gate D-42 at MIA.
Miami-Dade police, federal transportation officials and other law enforcement agencies responded to the incident. Officials planned to screen passengers before allowing them to leave.
Other reports, again unconfirmed, said one person may have been wounded. But Mary Walters, a Miami-Dade police spokeswoman, said she was unaware of anyone being hurt.
Gate D-42 is secured, but the rest of Concourse D reopened after some flight delays.
