Flight attendant VEO requests

I'm sorry folks, but I don't agree with your assessment. I love this job and EVEN after the pay cuts our pay is inline with all the majors and it is still a fantastic job with good benefits. We really had it good before and now we are having to suck up concessions like all the legacy carriers. I have no interest in leaving and I certainly don't see "10 years of hell". I see a descent paying job with fantastic flexibility and benefits that equal those of most companies in this country. Sorry to be such an optimist!

Btw...as of this morning 2059 have taken the early out. The deadline is tonight.

I still like my job, but once all the new "work rules" or "lack of " work rules kick in its not going to be so great. Im optimistic that in the end we will adjust and get used to it. Im in my 40s with almost 15 years and have never been off reserve. (may never be off). I know the senior fas will avoid the brunt of the new "contract" especially the reserve part which is worst part of this job. (at least to me) If I was in my 60s and still on reserve I would take the little 40K and run! (or whats left after taxes). Yea if your off reserve its still going to be great especially if you can hold anything you want. It seems that the fas still on reserve (whether 45 or 65 years old) are not complaining too much. i think they have given up and accepted that they will never get off reserve and moved on. The new work rules are going to hit us the hardest. I imagine the retirements may pick up after a month or two reserve cycles. I worked for a low fare non union airline before AA and believe me reserve was hell. They worked you any way they wanted to and would ignore the FAA minimums too. I dont think AA will be that bad but the FAA minimums are not pretty either. Of course I was in my early 30s and didnt know any better so in that case ignorance was bliss!! LOL

The election period runs thru Sept 20, so still ten days to go. I still predict over 2,000.

And there you have it. I'd quietly guessed 2,000 but it may wind up being 2,200 before the night is thru.

I've seen a lot of comments on the interest free loan being taken out... assuming the $40,000 won't be kicking them into the next tax bracket, they'll wind up getting a refund come February...

Did APFA negotiate for the ability to defer part or the max allowable into a 401K and keep that portion tax deferred? We used to have that option on profit sharing if I recall.

Per the APFA:

Money-‐ $40,000
a. Cannot be put in 401k
b. Twenty-‐fivepercentincometaxandotherpayrolltaxeswillbe deducted. Estimate for take home after taxes is approximately $27,000
c. Everyonewillhavethesametaxeswithheld.Ifyouareinalowertax bracket for the year you receive your $40,000, you will receive a refund. If you are in a higher bracket, you will be required to pay additional taxes. Ask your accountant concerning your own personal situation and your previous year’s marginal tax rate.

I'm with you, Jersey. A lot of people need a few years on the street to be convinced of just how good it is.

So my initial guess of 2000 wasn't so unlikely after all. And there are the travel separations to be worked after the VEO window closes.

Many of these international openings will have to be backfilled. It'll be interesting in the next few months to see just how the dust settles. A lot of people might end up being where they want to be.

When the travel separations are done it'll probably be 2300-2400. Great news all around. I'd be willing to bet we'll see newhires next spring and summer.

I am pleasantly surprised at the final number. I guess I'm doing a lot of flying with senior people who have no intention of leaving. EVER! During the enrollment period, I did not talk to a single f/a who said they were taking the VEOP. All I ever heard was how unfair the travel plan was if you were under 50 (as if there was one thing new about the travel plan if you leave the company prior to age 50).

Just goes to show how people say one thing in the galley, and another thing in the privacy of their hotel room or voting booth...

Just checked the APFA website. Nothing in there at all about the VEO yet. I guess they havent gotten to the office yet, maybe still in bed. LOL! I guess they will get around to it this afternoon.

With at least 13 new 77Ws on the way in the next 18 months, and the growth in flying that is planned, perhaps hiring off the street can begin soon for the first time in over 11 years.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that another 1,000 will retire/quit in the next year or so once they realize how much the work rules have changed. They'll wish they had signed up for the early out.

A lot of people who were not yet 50 passed on the VEOP and instead are taking Article 30, which is a continuous program that is part of our contract that allows for separation if you have 20 years of service and are between 45-55. You get a smaller lump sum and 10 round trips for you and your spouse or dom. partner for the rest of your life. A lot of people who were not going to turn 50 during the VEOP didn't want to end up with no pass travel after 18 months, so I think we will see a lot of Article 30 retirements as well. Once you put it in you have 90 days to rescind it and then it's permanent and you leave three months later. So Article 30 departures will start coming in about 6 months.

As for final VEOP numbers.... 2193 plus 12 on furlough who are coming back in November.
