What's interesting about this is that we had the exact same scenario play out in my city. PIT-MSP flight diverts here.... All PAX "held" in gate until FBI/FAA/TSA can talk to them....

For that one they thought someone had been smoking in the lav. However, now that (at least) a second one has happened, the question is: Were 2 people smoking, or is this a potential design flaw in the E75?

This is an interesting paragraph from the story...

A Northwest Airlines 757-200 with 193 passengers and crew declared an emergency in flight yesterday morning after a 3- by 2-ft panel, which included underlying hydraulic lines, ripped from the rear upper section of the right wing, hit the window at passenger row 28 and then damaged the right side of the horizontal stabilizer.

A 3ft x 2ft panel is exactly the same size as a spoiler panel on the trailing edge of the wing, and they are hydraulically actuated too - I wonder if that's what departed the A/C during flight? :huh:

Here's a picture that a passenger took from the a/c that emergency landed in LAS yesterday. It looks like the panel was located just outboard of the #8 ground spoiler on the rt. wing.

Keep an eye out for the news reports on NW19 from MSP. According to another board, it took off from MSP and returned back with a hydraulic issue. This is a 747-400. Below is the FlightAware tracking that shows it made it all the way to the BC coast before turning back.

Obviously the issue wasn't overly urgent or they would have dropped into YVR and likely went back to MSP due to it being a mtc. station. Why not SEA, though?

MD-80 is based on the DC-9 so i'll take them.
I'm pretty sure NWA has DC-9s.

yes NWA does have MD-80s as we had the pleasure of seeing one divert to my city about a month ago and the new hires at NWA didnt even know how to hanlde it

MD-80s ??????? I bet you mean DC-9 - 50 .......NWA got rid of the MD-80's in the early to mid 90s. They only had a handful then....5 if I remember right
