Some species were wiped out.
I can't of any species that has been "wiped out" that I would like to have existing again. Dodo bird? Nope. Carrier Pigeon? Too messy. T-Rex? Too hungry.
Some species were wiped out.
“Just as we did to those beings, the extraterrestrials might proceed to kill, infect, dissect, conquer, displace or enslave us, stuff us as specimens for their museums or pickle our skulls and use us for medical research,” says the study, published in the journal Acta Astronautica.
Scientific estimates are that there are/were over 8 million different species on the planet. New species are being cataloged at the rate of about 15,000 a year. Some estimates say that the oceans alone could be holding close to 650,000 species that have yet to be discovered. We have only cataloged about 25% of the species. The natural extinction rate is about 1-5 species per year (known as the background rate). Current estimates rang anywhere from 1,000-10,000 times the natural extinction rate.
What this seems to boil down to is we have very little idea of what has existed and we have no idea of what we are loosing due to the fact that we don't even know about 75% of what is out there. All scientific indications are that we (humans) have a huge impact on this planet. Our impact is continuous and long term. I feel sorry for future generations.
Key words being, " Government Employees" !![]()
The last major one was about 65 million years ago.
It's not a routine occurrence.
Some species were wiped out.
Earth climate was for ever changed.
Of that 8,000 species we lose about 25 of them a day by merely doing nothing. One of the things this whole Global Warming non sense shows is the arrogance of the human race. The earth has been here between 6,000 & 5,000,000,000 years depending upon whose numbers you use and it's has rolled along quite nicely with and without human inhabitants. The Earth is NOT in trouble! We as a species may be in trouble, but not the earth. We don't need to save the planet as it will be here when we're gone which oddly enough the Bible and science agree on.
That does not make any sense to me.
I can understand that POV coming from an atheist like my self. I would think that someone who believes they were given this life by a god who will judge them after they die would be a bit more concerned about how they treated their home. My bad. Carry on.
