Glo-Bull Warming and Science

Scientific estimates are that there are/were over 8 million different species on the planet. New species are being cataloged at the rate of about 15,000 a year. Some estimates say that the oceans alone could be holding close to 650,000 species that have yet to be discovered. We have only cataloged about 25% of the species. The natural extinction rate is about 1-5 species per year (known as the background rate). Current estimates rang anywhere from 1,000-10,000 times the natural extinction rate.

What this seems to boil down to is we have very little idea of what has existed and we have no idea of what we are loosing due to the fact that we don't even know about 75% of what is out there. All scientific indications are that we (humans) have a huge impact on this planet. Our impact is continuous and long term. I feel sorry for future generations.

Of that 8,000 species we lose about 25 of them a day by merely doing nothing. One of the things this whole Global Warming non sense shows is the arrogance of the human race. The earth has been here between 6,000 & 5,000,000,000 years depending upon whose numbers you use and it's has rolled along quite nicely with and without human inhabitants. The Earth is NOT in trouble! We as a species may be in trouble, but not the earth. We don't need to save the planet as it will be here when we're gone which oddly enough the Bible and science agree on.

(I know, they are just stupid government employees telling us all that the moon is not made of cheese)

Key words being, " Government Employees" !

The last major one was about 65 million years ago.

It's not a routine occurrence.

Some species were wiped out.

Earth climate was for ever changed.

Maybe evolving?

Man has had an impact ever since he harnessed fire......man has impacted ancient times....so whats the big deal.

Ever see those missing mountain tops in South America? Didn't happen since the industrial age.

And you did fall in love with the hockey stick graph......

Its a matter of scale. Back when fire was harnessed there were about 500 million people. We did not hit 1 billion till 1800. now we are already hitting 7 billion. The impact we have now is exponentially greater than it was just 200 years ago much less 4000 years. Evolution takes time. The impact of a meteor easy instantaneous. Any species that were to survive would have to evolve.

Show me where. I do not even recall looking at tbe graph much less talking about it.

The research I read said that average is only 1-5 but lets go with 25 just for grins. The 25 extinctions would be just .003 of the total. That leaves 99.9% being killed by .....? Man kind has only been on the planet for about 1.8 million years. We have been industrialized for less than 300, less than a hundred if you want to have anything close to what we have now. By 1800 we were only 1 billion people and non industrialized. Now were are far more industrialized and close to 7 billion. We have barely been here a blink of an eye in geological times. In that short time we have added a massive amount of contamination to the air, soil and water. Most articles I have read portray the environment as a finely tuned clock. It does not take much to knock it out of whack and that once you do, the effects are like ripples in a pond. The spread out farther and farther. No one is saying the earth is in trouble in the sense that you are implying. The planet will exist in some form or another till the sun goes nova. The environment and climate are possibly at stake. If you know anything about marine fish and the coral reefs you know that a change as little as 1 degree in average temperatures can have a huge affect. Plankton blooms in the northern oceans have declined. Research shows that the the blooms are an indicator for oxygen an nutrients in the oceans. It is all linked together. I think we as a species are in trouble. We are destroying our home. That does not make any sense to me.

That does not make any sense to me.

Individual Freedom and Liberty includes the right to be stupid. If, and I question if we are soiling our own nest then frankly it's our right to do so.

To borrow a typical 8 year olds phrase, "You're not the boss of me" and neither are the Kyoto Accords

I can understand that POV coming from an atheist like my self. I would think that someone who believes they were given this life by a god who will judge them after they die would be a bit more concerned about how they treated their home. My bad. Carry on.

"All men are created equal, each endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights among these are Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness"

As to my faith, I'm more of a "Free Will" Baptist along the lines of the Augustinian Theodicy. Like many, some versions of Christianity require that one only be Saved, not a saint.

No idea what that has to do with crapping where you sleep but what ever.
