GM Bailout

How can it surprise anyone that U.S. automakers find it difficult to compete when the UAW practically mandates featherbedding? This triumph of attitude over substance finds little sympathy with people being asked to fund a bailout. Designing better cars or suck-ing in bailouts isn't going to solve the auto companies' problems

I don't know about featherbedding.....its stupid work rules that management agreed to in better times. Now it comes home to roost....just like all the renegotiated airline contracts.Realistically...UAW is kind of one of the last stands of yesterday's contract world and its going to change.I don't see any quick concessions....you don't do it overnight.I see Pelosi drooling over the prospect of getting Congress' fingers into auto manufacturing....all kind of stupid mandated requirements that most likely will cause higher prices, fewer sales and more monetary issues.

As far as unions outliving their usefulness.....That I don't quite know about.....tragically,unions have become a business unto themselves and left the membership looming out in left field. At the same time...members have also found limited use for their unions and more often than not want the benefits without the obligation.Unions too ,from the floor up to the office are in the same quandary as big business these days.It needs to change all around...or go the way of the Edsel....

personally i do not believe that story ... why ? because it doesn't sound logical .. it sounds made up , which most likely it is ... most human beings are rational and do not behave like that ...

The article is from the Houston Chronicle, is very true and the scenario has been repeated millions of times. I myself encountered the very same treatment on a vist to Ford HQ in Dearborn.

Freedom, you comments sound very similar to other union members' bravado I've heard thru the years.

Watch out for that meteor coming your way!

(or maybe not....)

Pay raise for judges tucked into bailout plan

The raise -- labeled a cost of living adjustment -- would bring U.S. District court judges up to par with members of Congress, who will receive an almost $5,000 boost on Jan. 1. District judges and lawmakers now earn $169,300 a year but are expected to be awarded a 2.8 percent raise next year, said Dick Carelli, a spokesman for the Administrative Office of the United States Courts.

Let the 'porking' continue... 😛

Or....................instead of giving banks billions of dollars, which they are hoarding ,how about giving all "Tax Payers" , no bottom feeders please, say..........$30,000 and telling them they must use this money towards the purchase of an american made vehicle !

In the end, we're footin' the bill anyways !

Well I hope you enjoy your Toyota Camry as it has MORE American made components then the Ford Taurus.

I defy you to define an American made car.

What you're advocating in reality is to have citizens buy only from the Big Three.

OK..................have to purchase a vehicle from 1 of the Big 3.

Feel better now, Bob?

Either way it's a better plan than the one they're pushing on the tax-payers !

Lets see here :

Option 1. Take a pay cut and keep my job.

Option 2. Tell Big Brother to kiss my @$$, I'm not giving up one penny, even if it means I'll be out of a job in 2 months !

BTW : To make all of you pro-union people feel all warm and fuzzy..............management needs a pay-cut too !

I think a replay is in order:

Companys are in business to make money for the "SHAREHOLDERS"!

They are not in business to provide jobs!

Anyone disagree with this statement ?

Yet, you say "Option 1. Take a pay cut and keep my job."

I thought:

I am guessing that does not apply when it comes to your job...

BTW, how low will you go before you decide that you will not work any longer?

let's all just hope that this goes down OK and we're all able to save our collective asses ... we don't need another Lehman brothers ...

Actually "IT" did apply to my job !

I took "SEVERAL" paycuts to keep my job...........thank you for your concern though !

And you know what.............I'm still getting a paycheck that pays the bills !

As far as the UAW..............take a cut in pay now or take a larger cut in pay in bankruptcy !

Here's 22lbs. worth of problems facing the U.S. auto industry !

It's a wonder they manage to get one bolt tightened on the tranny !

Well if you're going to post anecdotal "evidence" to support your claim, at least be savvy enough to peruse it to make sure it in fact does support your claim. Most of the comments there reflect that either:

1) That's normal in most enterprises,union or non-union

OR

2) It's regulation to a positive end ( unless one is a free-market fundamentalist ideologue )

BS. You're trying to frame this in terms of corporate concubine "talking points". A fallacy. "False Dilemma" in this case.

The UAW while not completely blameless, have concerns that should be noted, and not marginalized via some bum's-rush railroading, ala the bank bailouts. This could very well be an orchestrated a slippery slope to set them up for their eventual demise, leaving GM in the US as a "virtual" automaker.

If they can't compete due to overly high cost structure then whats the answer?

Extending them tax monies to continue status quo isn't helping either.
