Greetings everyone, I'm currently working on an essay topic in regards to US' aviation outlook for 2009. Air travel and air cargo volume are both down significantly in the current state of economy, but some analysts are predicting that the year 2009 will be a great and profitable year for US aviation at least for some airlines. I've done some research on google but cannot come to a rational conclusion to why these analysts will make such a claim. If anyone can give me some ideas and point me in the right direction to writing this essay I'll greatly appreciate it, thank you very much for your time. Any info will help me out a lot, thanks again.

You might want to start with the ATA and IATA sites (Air Transport Association for the domestic carriers and International Air Transport Association for international including US domestic). While they're the lobbying organizations for the airlines (especially the ATA) they also put out a fair amount of information on forecasts.
Just keep in mind that the "experts" change their forecasts about as often as they change clothes - every time economic forecasts change the forecasts for aviation change - so what is "sure to happen" today can change tomorrow.
Plus, for the airlines there's the offsetting effects of the economy and fuel prices. If it looks like the economy is going to be better than previous forecasts (normally good for the airlines) oil prices rise because of greater than previously forecast demand (bad for the airlines).
