What's the deal with the AFA? Why are they not listed as being under negotiation? I'm confused. Have they thrown in the towel or are they refusing to participate?

AFA had approved a contract in January. The reason that AFA's name came up is that they were upset about the pension issues. The AFA then said they wanted to go back to the old contract (pre 1/05) because United had not abided by it. The judge effectively told them a couple weeks ago that the flight attendants would keep their contract intact and that United couldn't eliminate it. Therefore, AFA had no legs to stand on.

Actually, it turns out it's an "agreement in principle"

Quote:

A formal contract agreement is to be presented in federal bankruptcy court June 17. Judge Eugene Wedoff gave the two sides until then to work out remaining details.

"Well, my term paper's pretty much done, but I still need to type out these two pages I've handwritten, and finish the table of contents."

And how did this come about...

"The tentative deal... was disclosed in court with Wedoff poised to rule on United's request to break the contract....The two sides bargained through much of the holiday weekend and worked out the basic terms of an agreement in negotiations at an undisclosed location near O'Hare International Airport shortly before the afternoon court session."

Gotta love these guys.

They'll now take a two week break, and I wouldn't be surprised to find them rushing around on June 17th to get out the formal agreement.

Bugs Bunny might suggest that "maroon" is an appropriate color for UAL's fleet.
