You should also point out the fact that one of the reasons UPS can pay their mechanics more is because they chose wages over jobs. TWU chose jobs over wages by holding firm to the outsourcing caps. Had portions of overhaul been allowed to go off-property, AA might be in a better position to improve pay for those who remained.
Forgive me for reading all of the words in the article, but the $9/hour says wages and benefits.
If that's really $1.61/hour for total compensation, it's still better than AA, but not exactly keeping up with national COLA.
The big difference here is that UPS NEVER HAD overhaul capability. Hence, they had nothing to negotiate away in that respect. And no one is suggesting that AA shed TUL, AFW and MCI.
The bottom line is that we have sacrificed for almost 6 years and now they want to extend OUR sharing of the sacrifice for two more years? ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
They could give us back everything they took and AA WILL STILL BE AHEAD OF THE GAME BECAUSE THE BILLIONS IN SAVINGS FROM ALL EMPLOYEES.
