Local,
I also like this strategy: A significant disincentive to employers, composed of fines, potential prison terms for repeat employer offenders, etc.
However, without any other economic or political mechanisms, such a strategy may cause a blow to isolationists. Without those political/economic protections, many companies (mostly those that hired illegal immigrants) will be more motivated to ship jobs overseas to keep their cost structure at a similar level to that of the pre-illegal-immigrant-employer-crackdown.
In other words, this strategy may be trading one poison for another poison.
That is not much of a concern to me as I do not mind the shipping off of non-skilled worker jobs, which just so happens to be the typical type of job that many illegal immigrants are currently working. But as I understand, a scenario such as that may be disturbing to you. So, I think it may be a bit more complicated than simply turning the faucet off to satisfy those who hold similar views as yourself; other much more complicated controls would need to be developed.
If the rest of the country is like Cal. I think we can "manage" to use the cost (like $7.2 Billion a year in school for children of illegal aliens) for illegals on something beneficial to citizens without worrying about giving unskilled Americans higher pay for those same jobs.
Let them "build" Mexico with their "you can't live with out us" burden. For those that NEED to move their "cost" over seas. It's called import tariffs, just like they do in Japan and the EU. (you wanna do biz in the richest market on earth...pay for it)
And yes Local, I must disagree with you...it has a lot to do with race. I remember very will the Haitian boat people. You would have thought Russia was attacking (with the number of Helios, Boats, Ground personnel). We had so many Police, N Guard/ Coast guard on the beaches it was as fast as lightening (ALL RETURNED to Haiti. Now, in my eyes...an illegal is an illegal, I DO NOT CARE what color they are...GO HOME!
