American Airlines' Commuter Carrier American Eagle Cancels Some Caribbean Flights

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- American Airlines' commuter carrier American Eagle canceled 38 flights in the Caribbean Friday as some flight dispatchers stayed home while negotiating a new contract, a company official said.
Some American Eagle dispatchers called in sick Friday morning, resulting in the cancelation of 16 flights from Miami and 22 from San Juan, Puerto Rico, said American Airlines spokeswoman Minette Velez. She said 32 flights were delayed.

Many other American Eagle flights in the region were not affected. American Eagle has 68 flights daily from San Juan. There were also 44 flights delayed outside the region, Velez said.

"We're filling in with management staff as much as possible. We're working hard to minimize the impact," Velez said.

Dispatchers are licensed employees responsible for giving aircraft captains the go-ahead for flights. They are currently in negotiations for a new contract.

"Everybody is working hard to solve this as soon as possible. We're asking our customers to contact reservations or to visit our web site," Velez said.

The cancellations did not affect American Airlines flights.

The parent company of American Airlines and American Eagle is AMR Corp., based in Fort Worth, Texas.

Message to all AMR Eagle Dispatchers - Friday, October 29, 2004 at 12:41
TO: All AMR Eagle Dispatchers
FROM: John E. Plowman, President Local 542
SUBJECT: Contractual Obligations
DATE: October 29, 2004

This morning at approximately 6:25 C, I was notified by Mike Sterenchuk that we had a large number of sick calls at Executive and American Eagle. This memo is to remind and impress upon you that all of us continue to be bound by our Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Railway Labor Act and status quo provisions of that Act. Any form of concerted activity or self-help is illegal.

I want to make it very clear that you must go to work as scheduled. Not to do so may seriously undermine our negotiations, jeopardize your job and subject the TWU to legal liability.

Sincerely & Fraternally Yours

John E. Plowman

The courtoom is like a second office to the TWU. But they are so used to being sued by their own members they would be completely off guard if they were actually taken to court by an EMPLOYER! Will they settle that out of court under a gag order like they do so many other cases?
