In God we trust

The wording of the poll seems a bit misleading.

While the phrase has been in use since the mid 1800's on coins, the phrase did not appear on paper currency till 1957. In 1956 Congress made the phrase the official US motto. Many argue that this was a reaction to the cod war with the 'godless' evil empire. While part of the use of the phrase is indeed historic, the application to it's use on paper currency is not.

I would rater not waste money reprinting currency and having Congress waste time arguing about it. After all, they have important business to deal with such as steroid use in baseball.

I don't think it should have ever been placed on the currency in the place but it is there and it would be more trouble than it's worth to get it off. I did find this quote by Theodor Roosevelt:

My own feeling in the matter is due to my very firm conviction that to put such a motto on coins, or to use it in any kindred manner, not only does no good but does positive harm, and is in effect irreverence, which comes dangerously close to sacrilege... it seems to me eminently unwise to cheapen such a motto by use on coins, just as it would be to cheapen it by use on postage stamps, or in advertisements."

Not a surprising poll result, for a country who's vast majority of the population is christian.

But the Above is MEANINGLESS, since the country was founded on the FALSE premise of MANIFEST DESTINY !!

YOUR Turn !!!

People claim to be Christian, but attendance in organized religion is down sharply.

I would guess that a larger percentage of people "believe in God" than would call themselves Christian or attend a religious function. And the poll, and other similar polls, probably reflect that.

Good point Lily !

Without ever tipping my hand to folks, I'm finding MORE and MORE and MORE people who will openly admit to worshipping a "higer power", but shy away from....JC !!

No Wonder the Jews keep smiling and shaking their heads. They've only been trying to "TELL people", for dam* near 6,000 Years.

OH Well,...............Nobody "stays on top" forever !
