What's new

In Seat Entertainment

The question is, how much of your profit sharing check (when and if it comes) are you willing to give up for great IFE? My answer, not much.

Let’s look at it another way…
The 767’s are being updated what if ISV is on the refurb a/c? I think it would bring us more inline with what the competition is offering as well as bring us more inline with the product of the A330.

Let’s also not forget that the ISV makes money…now I have not seen the product on B6 or Song, but I understand that PPV and other pay channels make good money, surely enough to offset the cost of the disadvantages such as weight.

It seems that our new management team understands they may need to spend some money to make money, so I would not say it’s out of the question. Better Yet, as employees, lets make it clear that this would be something we would LIKE to see on LCC and give our customers something to enjoy while flying US! I know that I would.

that was seigel who announced that in that sob story video he put out . what do you expect.
i am not saying that that was the cause of them going into bk or losing money . i am just saying that we really do not need it and it costs to much money. stop trying to f##king downplay everything i say.
Seigle made out pretty well.. maybe he was ensuring his buyout$ by saving that money for himself? I know I sound cynical and I agree.

Actually it was a change in Management.

Not true. Current management looked at IFE before and determined that the cost of adding the equipment to existing aircraft was too expensive for the revenue it would (hopefully) generate. There is no direct correlation between IFE and additional revenue. There is direct correlation between schedule/price and additional revenue.

I don't expect IFE/PTV's to be installed into the domestic fleet anytime soon, I just hope they give in and put it into the 190.

lol, planes with the shortest flight segments get IFE  ..not going to happen.

My inflight entertainment is called a book or a newspaper or a good news magazine. They are amazing little items. If more people used these items for entertainment we would probably be a lot better off as a society.

KCflyer and others are correct. Long term (3-5 years) everyone will have their own in-flight entertainment with them. Its a bad investment for the airlines, esspecially since I-pods will have long videos soon.

Or you could read a book, or do crosswords like I do when not woking.

I look at it as marketing for the family vacation, not for every flyer esspecially the business traveler.

Ditto. My IFE is a book or newspaper.

These days, you can buy portable DVD players for under $100 and the prices keep dropping. You can even buy movies and cartoons that play on your kid's Gameboy. And of course there are video iPods and PS2's. With all that available, I just don't see it being worth the cost and weight to add IFE systems to aircraft.

I concur. I'm slow when it comes to technology, so if I get bored reading the in-flight mag and have finished the sudoku, I'll listen to my CD player. Maybe in 10 years I will buy an I-pod. 🙂

Even though I don't watch movies on overhead screens, I don't like those things because the flight attendants usually ask people to close their window shades. My window *is* my IFE.

The sole redeeming quality of flying Northwest is that, similar to Southwest, you have to entertain yourself!

Though I must say Channel 9 on UA (ATC communications) is very nice; it's cheap for the airline to administer, it's very entertaining if you like that sort of thing, and it doesn't require anyone else to close their window shades.

A PS2 hooks to your TV at home and needs AC power, you must mean a PSP, lol!!

You're right, sorry. I make that mistake all the time at home and my son is always correcting me when I call his PSP a PS2. That's what happens when you reach 50. 🙂

West has been doing this for the last couple months on every a/c w/video, and trust me, it is VERY annoying.

I agree, nothing worse than being subjected to onboard comercials played over the PA/monitors that you have no control over.

Having the IFE built into the plane alway creates issues.

At HP our IFEs are always MELed. INOP monitors, INOP headset jacks, or a completely INOP system. If it does work, you have no choice over content. First, a 6 minute infomercial about the wonders of Reno/Tahoe, then Big Mama's House II, followed by an episode of Cheers? Please...let's evolve...

I vote for offering entertainment units for rent at the departure gate like AS and YX do. Load it with a half a dozen movies, sitcoms, things for people of all ages and interests, and a ton of music...then rent it for $10 (comp for FC or DM Preferred) - use it inflight, turn it in at arrival gate.

The old KISS theory, you know?
