Several years ago, I met a diesel mechanic at a Petrol Truck Stop who was a soldier in Iraq. He said kids are playing soccer with US soldiers giving them supplies instead of attending religious service. A choice was givin the kids: team sports vs harsh religious practices. Also, wherever you turn in Bagdad and many of the cities in Iraq, you see westernazation of culture. Movie theaters, McDonalds, Jack in the Box, Marshalls, etc. And micro loans to persons wanting to start their own little businesses, and women attending universities, and wearing western styles, and drinking Starbucks, and they go home at night to play Monopoloy, and Parchizi, and Spades instead of behaving in a proper manner for the neiborhood snitch's benifit.
According to that soldier, the old Iraq is dead, things will never go back to where they were. I do not fully agree with that; the possiblity is always there for the old regiem to assert itself. If a generation passes, then I would agree. Not now. It is too soon.
