It is planned for a May opening with Customs ready supposedly in April. I would imagine that most international flights will operate from there, but not all. The new terminal gates are designed to accommodate all widebodies, even the A380. International arriving flights do not need to utilize the new terminal for customs because concourse C "odd" gates 33-47 are also customs gates. I also hear that the current contract carriers, Finnair and Malev will be getting gets at the new termianl. I was also told that Japan Airlines wants in as they are a "member elect" the the Oneworld alliance.

Perhaps, but they're also a founding partner of Terminal One (along with LH, AF, and KE), and I'd imagine they've got a bit of a sweetheart lease over there.

You're probably right, but with a mere two flights a day at JFK, it would seem to make sense for JAL to move to the new AA terminal once it is complete. Made sense for AA to move to T-2 at NRT so that JAL connections would be easier. Flip side to that is that JFK connections to/from those JAL flights isn't as big a deal as, say, at ORD or LAX.

If space is still at a premium at JFK and their lease permits it, I'm sure they could sublease to someone else and maybe even make a dime or two off the deal (since they're signatory and would have lower lease rates). But if AA's more expensive for ground handling than their current provider (quite likely), I wouldn't count on them moving just for the sake of the alliance.

In my mind there is also the question of the clubs. I have been in the JL club in T1. It is a different experience; but it is not quite so different as the experience in Asian city JL clubs.

Compared to the T1 JL club, I question if Japanese nationals would feel very 'comfortable' in the T9 AC. I think NOT! But would there even be a location a JL club?
