This past week has seen delay after delay of aircraft headed to LAS from our station. In chatting with a pilot while waiting for push clearance, I find out it is due to a Runway resurfacing project that has begun and, thus, forcing the closure of a runway on a daily basis. There has been chatter that this project is to go on until March '09??

Any LAS employees in the know about this? If so, this will add another blemish to LAS, with mis-conx, mis-handled bags etc... not good.

WN is also suffering from this, too, as confirmed from their staff at the airport...

Not a good time to pick a major runway project with the Holiday travel season approaching and the rainy season ahead.... hmmm.

Runway projects wait for no one, we have had a runway shutdown @ night in CLT since July. Actually there was a short time this past summer we had two runways shut down, even if your not working on the actual runway surface you may be forced to still shut down the runway if your in the runway safety area...It's the cost of keeping your airport updated and the Feds happy....

Considering the majority of our trips on the West go thru Vegas all the time, this really Sucks!! I have incurred delays up to 2 hours, every leg! Expect to have shorter layovers and getting home later also!

thanks for posting the "info" snippet... that sums it all up! So... it's actually until MAY '09... Bummer.

Reason for the length of the resurfacing is due to the fact that 25L/7R is Asphalt. Asphalt takes double the time due to the many layers vs Concrete runways are pretty fast installs of rebar and quick concrete fills to create the slabs.
Rebar is not used in runways, dowel bars at the joints and wire mesh where you have several surface lights, like the Runway Status Lights.

Actually one could argue that this is the best time to do this kind of work. Slower season. Lower overall demand, and lest we forget that US pulled out a lot of flights before the project even began!

And, considering these projects have lots and lots of notice, why didn't the airlines using LAS pare down the schedules a little bit to work with the capacity constraints!???!

Yes runway construction till May, and yes this time of year was picked on purpose. Delays seem to depend on the way the wind blows quite frankly. Delays haven't been bad unless the wind is up and the direction of wind, but a couple of weekends at the beginning of the construction were awful. Heard they have 2 - 10 hour construction shifts working daily.

Good News Las Vegas? For those traveling WN, new walkway from ticket counter to C concourse, and soon walkway between B & C to open up.

Leaving LAS on this past Wed at noon, we were number 18 for departure..... That's the first time in over 20 trips out of there I can recall any such delay.

Our arrival a few nights earlier was on time, though.
